Copy/paste no longer working completely in Excel
- Jul 27, 2018
4kchitsend - try upgrading the files. In Excel, click on the File menu, then Upgrade, or update or something. I don't have an XLS file around to see what the exact menu item is.
Then for grins, save it, close excel, and reopen. Does that fix it?
- Reboot. Ensure that nothing wonky is wrong with Windows and the clipboard.
- Repair Office quickly. In Add/Remove programs is Office and an option to do a quick repair. Probably have a "change" button or something to see it.
- Do a full repair of office (same as above, different checkbox) which takes long.
- Worst case, uninstall, use the Office Cleanup utility from https://support.office.com/en-us/article/uninstall-office-from-a-pc-9dd49b83-264a-477a-8fcc-2fdf5dbf61d8 then reinstall Office after rebooting.

Tried the quick repair to no avail.
I opened a new Excel sheet and it copies and pastes into Word just fine. But multiple Excel files are not copying properly. Most were generated from Excel 1997 (a couple of computers ago) and whenever saving, a compatibility screen would pop up. I simply copy and paste onto a new spread sheet. I'm hoping I don't need to start over and create new originals. It is as if I clicked on a wrong item which only permits pasting as a photo or text.

That did it. I never knew one had to manually update Excel. I assumed it automatically updated. The old files were .xls. The new are .xlsx Thanks for your suggestions. It is kind of you to assist. Enjoy your day.

If you have the same for newly generated Excel file when the problem is with the application.
If that's only for the converted files something is wrong with files. When you paste to Word (or any other Office app) the default option is paste as HTML. Perhaps Word can't parse HTML code from Excel and paste as picture or text excluding HTML option.
And if you save the file in Excel format (.xlsx), I guess now it's in binary format (.xls), is that the same issue?
