construct a simple line graph

I need help with simple instructions for constructing a line graph. I am new to using excel - Its been about 15 years since I last used excel. I have specific instructions of how to make my graph assignment, however, simple steps not mentioned are the technical steps I need to resolve.

The first mistake is when I select the data with the cursor over all the data points- the cursors leaves out one cell.

When I insert the line chart it asked the location range to create the sparklines - it says location reference  isnt valid because the cells are not all in the same column or row. It says to select cells in a single column or row. Where or how do I place the cursor and highlight to include all the data?

  • Hello Kinsey,

Based on the description you gave, you definitely clicked on the Line Sparkline.

    The insert the Line Chart:
Click on any cell in your data
In the Charts group of the Insert tab, locate and click on Line Chart. (In-between Column and Pie charts)

    I hope this helps.. Regards

Most probably you click on Line icon in Sparklines section. Select Line chart icon in Charts section instead.

If you have continuous range it's not necessary to select it all, you may stay on any cell within the range before clicking the icon.

Or you may select entire range, click quick analysis icon on right bottom and select the chart from menu below
