Conditional formatting for entire row based on data in one cell
- Jul 30, 2019
Hello
Assuming that D is the column containing the status cells, and you wish to apply conditional formatting to rows 1:50, here are the steps:
1. Select any cell in row 1
2. Go to 'Conditional Formatting>New Rule>Use a formula to determine which cells to format'
3. In the formula field paste =$D1="Shipped", set the required format and click 'OK'
4. Go to 'Conditional Formatting>Manage Rules' and locate the rule you have just created
5. In the field 'Applies to' paste '=$1:$50', or just select the required rows, starting from row 1, then click 'OK'.
If you type the word 'SHIPPED' in any cell of the column D (rows 1 to 50), the entire row will be conditionally formatted
Hope this helps

Let's say you want to format rows from row 2 to row 100 that contain "sales" with possibly other text in column D.
Select rows 2 to 100.
The active cell in the selection should be in row 2, for example A2.
On the Home tab of the ribbon, click Conditional Formatting > New Rule...
Select 'Use a formula to determine which cells to format'.
Enter the formula
=ISNUMBER(SEARCH("sales", $D2))
Click Format...
Activate the Fill tab.
Select a highlight color.
Click OK, then click OK again.
Finally the solution to my problem 🙌💖
For help of others -
I have a table of data in A7:D50 with dates in C7:C50.
I wanted to highlight a row (only for columns A:D), anytime the date in C matches the specific date that I input into cell C2. I also wanted this rule to only apply to rows 7:50 so it wouldn't also highlight my reference cell in row 2.
Conditional Formatting > New Rule...
> 'Use a formula to determine which cells to format'
Apply to =A7:D50
Formula =ISNUMBER(SEARCH($C$2, $C7))
Now if the date in C2 appears in a row, then the cells in A, B, C & D of that row are highlighted!
NOTE: I am using the 365 Web version of Excel
