Column of Subtotals and Grand Total

I have a column with several entries.  The first 6 have a subtotal at the end.  The second group  of 9 entries also has a subtotal at the end and a third group of 10 entries has a subtotal at the end.  I then added each of the subtotals to get a grand total.  The math is correct but each time I open the file I get a notice saying there is a problem in that there is a circular reference either directly or indirectly.  I don't understand what I am doing wrong.

    Please check under

Formulas -> Error checking -> Circular reference

which cell contains a formula with a circular reference.

In my german Excel i've created a circular reference in cell G5 in order to show how to determine the cell with the circular reference.

At the bottom of the worksheet the cell containing the circular reference is displayed as well. "Zirkelbezug" in german Excel means circular reference.

Thank you for your response.  I did as you suggested and the program did identify a particular cell as the problem.  I checked that cell and all it had was one number, no formulas, pluses or anything else.  I read somewhere that changing the formatting of a cell could cause this problem so I re-formatted the cell and thereafter got a message that the circular reference was resolved.  I am in the middle of something else and cannot shut down the computer, so I will double check later to see if the problem has been fixed.  Again thank you. OliverScheurich

I went back into the file and discovered the problem. I was able to fix it and at the moment everything is okay. Again thank you very much for your help. You set me on the path to the solution.
