Cell formatting --- numbers

Running Excel for Mac v 16.16.7 on a Mac Pro & OSX High Sierra.  I understand how to Format Cells & Numbers but cannot fix this one annoying problem.  No matter what Format I apply to a cell, if I enter a multi-digit number that ends in “8”, Excel automatically converts the “8” to a “0”.  This is driving me nuts! Any suggestions will be appreciated.
