can I prevent excel from automatically changing cell format to percentage when typing % into cell?
I use conditional formatting to display a number less than 1 as a percentage and a number greater than 1 as a comma separated number.
if I type 40% into this cell, it changes the format of the cell to percentage, and after that any number I type into the cell has 2 zero's removed because excel sees it as a percentage, which i do not want.
how can i resolve this?

To prevent Excel from automatically changing the cell format to a percentage when typing "%" into a cell, you can follow these steps:
- Select the cell or range of cells where you want to prevent the automatic percentage formatting.
- Right-click on the selected cell(s) and choose "Format Cells" from the context menu.
- In the Format Cells dialog box, go to the "Number" tab.
- Select the "Text" category from the list of options.
- Click "OK" to apply the changes.
By setting the cell format to "Text," Excel will treat the input as text rather than a numerical value with a percentage format. This will prevent Excel from automatically changing the cell format when you type "%" into the cell.
Note that after changing the format to "Text," you will not be able to perform mathematical operations directly in that cell. If you need to perform calculations with the values entered as percentages, you can use formulas in other cells to convert the text-formatted percentages to numerical values and then perform the calculations.
