Calculate data from two colums to give a total

Is it possible to calculate data from two colums to give a total number that match both criteria. Eg: Number of those that say "B" in colum D and also says "live" in colum L.

yes, this can be done using the COUNTIFS function:

=COUNTIFS(D1:D8,"B",L1:L8,"live")

Can this also be used to calculate those that do not include a word?
