autocorrect or autofill
What is the difference between autocorrect and autofill? How do I edit the information that is the source of autocorrect or autofill? I want to delete some of the incorrect entires from the source.

Thanks for the information but I am still confused. When I begin to type an entry in an excel cell, if I have previously typed the same name before, an otion shows in gray format to complete the entry. I want to delete or edit some of the simmilar suggested completions. richard_spear

I understand your question better now. It sounds like you are referring to Excel's "Autocomplete" feature, which suggests completions based on what you've previously typed in a cell. If you want to delete or edit the suggested completions, you can follow these steps:
To delete or edit Autocomplete suggestions in Excel:
- Type a portion of the word into the cell. When you see the grayed-out suggestion you want to remove or edit, use the down arrow key to highlight that suggestion.
- Press the "Delete" key to remove the suggestion. This will remove it from the Autocomplete memory, and it won't appear as a suggestion the next time you type that word.
- To edit a suggestion, simply select it and type your correction over it.
- Excel should now remember the edited or corrected entry for future Autocomplete suggestions.
Keep in mind that Excel's Autocomplete is based on your recent entries in the workbook. It does not have a centralized list of suggestions like Autocorrect. The suggestions are specific to the workbook you are currently working on. If you switch to a new workbook, Excel will generate suggestions based on the entries in that workbook.
If you want to clear all the Autocomplete suggestions in a specific workbook, you can do the following:
- Go to the "File" tab.
- Choose "Options" to open the Excel Options dialog box.
- Select "Advanced" from the left panel.
- Scroll down to the "Editing options" section.
- Uncheck the option that says "Enable AutoComplete for cell values."
- Click "OK" to save your changes.
This will clear all Autocomplete suggestions in the current workbook, but it will not affect suggestions in other workbooks.

In Excel, "Autocorrect" and "Autofill" are two different features, and each serves a distinct purpose:
- Autocorrect:
- Autocorrect is a feature that corrects common misspellings and typing errors as you type. It's more focused on improving your typing accuracy.
- It works across all of Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- For example, if you type "teh" by mistake, Autocorrect will automatically change it to "the."
To edit Autocorrect options in Excel:
- Go to "File" > "Options."
- In the Excel Options dialog box, select "Proofing."
- Click the "AutoCorrect Options" button.
- In the AutoCorrect dialog, you can add, modify, or delete entries.
- Autofill:
- Autofill is a feature in Excel that helps you quickly fill cells with patterns, series, or data from a source cell. It's used to extend a series of values or fill cells based on a pattern.
- It's handy for copying a formula, data series, or dates.
To use Autofill:
- Select the cell(s) with the data or formula you want to replicate.
- Hover your cursor over the small square in the bottom-right corner of the selection (this is called the "fill handle").
- Click and drag the fill handle to the desired range, and Excel will fill the cells based on the pattern or data source.
If you want to edit the information that is the source of Autocorrect or Autofill, you should follow these steps:
To edit Autocorrect entries:
- Go to "File" > "Options."
- In the Excel Options dialog box, select "Proofing."
- Click the "AutoCorrect Options" button.
- In the AutoCorrect dialog, you can add, modify, or delete entries.
To edit Autofill series:
- Select the cell(s) containing the source data or pattern.
- Modify the data or pattern in these cells as needed.
- Drag the fill handle to extend the modified series to the desired range.
Remember that Autofill uses the source data from the selected cell(s), so any changes made to the source data will be reflected when you use Autofill. The text and steps were edited with the help of AI.
