All Macros are missing from Personal Workbook

Hello,

My Outlook and Excel applications were recently updated to the newest versions. I tried to access an existing macro from my personal.xlsb and noticed that they were all missing! Is there any way to recover an older version of that personal workbook? For example, from a month ago? Any help or guidance is much appreciated?

If your macros are missing from your Personal Macro Workbook (personal.xlsb) in Office 365, it can be concerning, but there are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially recover an older version of the workbook:

    1. Check Recent Documents: First, check your recent documents in Excel. The Personal Macro Workbook should appear in your recent documents. If you find it, open it and see if your macros are present.
    2. Backup Locations: The Personal Macro Workbook is typically stored in one of the following locations:
      • C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART\personal.xlsb
      • C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART\personal.xlsb

You can navigate to these locations using File Explorer and check if there are older versions of the personal workbook saved. However, the AppData folder is usually hidden, so you may need to enable hidden files and folders in Folder Options.

    1. Use Excel Recovery: If your Office applications were updated, there's a chance that a conflict or issue occurred during the update. In Excel, you can try using the built-in Document Recovery feature. Go to "File" > "Open" > "Recent Documents" > "Recover Unsaved Workbooks" to see if there are any auto-recovery files.
    2. Restore from Backup: If you have a backup of your files, you can restore a previous version of the personal workbook from your backup.
    3. OneDrive or SharePoint: If you have been saving your Personal Macro Workbook in OneDrive or SharePoint, check there for older versions. These services often keep a version history, and you may be able to restore an older version.
    4. Windows File History: If you have Windows File History enabled, you can use it to restore an older version of your Personal Macro Workbook. Search for "File History" in Windows settings to access this feature.
    5. Check for Updates: Check if there are updates available for your Office 365 applications. Sometimes, issues with macros can be resolved with updates.
    6. VBA Project Recovery: In Excel, go to the "Developer" tab (if it is not visible, you can enable it in Excel Options) and open the Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) editor. Check if your VBA project is listed there. If it is, your macros may still exist, but the workbook itself might not be loading correctly. In that case, you can try to reattach the VBA project.

It is important to remember that macros are code, and if the personal workbook is still missing, you may need to recreate your macros from a previous backup or source. Be cautious and create backups of your macros in the future to avoid such issues. The text, steps and formulas was created with the help of AI.
