align decimals in a column
- Mar 22, 2018
Greetings, Damien!
I'm still not sure I believe this, but I tried using "General" alignment, with no indent, and all the decimals aligned perfectly. Go figure. You would think, though, that a leading spreadsheet program like Excel would have the option to align decimals!
Thanks for your input.

Can you post a screenshot of this? General does not align by decimal point. Excel does not have such a functionality. You need to format all cells with the same number of decimals and align them to the right, then the decimal points will be aligned correctly.
I already did all that. See the spreadsheet I posted above. As I said above, all cells were formatted as two-decimal numbers, but whether I aligned left or right, the alignment was inconsistent -- until I used "general".

Jonni Anderson As I said above, you use different "indent" settings and that will change the distance of the number from the edge of the cell. You need all "indent" settings to be the same.

Ingeborg: I did global formatting on the cells with numbers and set all indents to "0". (Or thought I did.) I'm not arguing with your findings; I'm just wondering why the formatting I did didn't "take" in all cells.
Thanks for your input.

Sometimes it takes more time trying to figure out the quirk of the problem than it is to solve it!
Best wishes for your Excel stuff!
Cheers
