adding up from a string of items
Hi
I am trying to calculate the total number of people living in the largest 1000 cities in the USA.
I can find a table that allows me to copy in this format
986,Addison,Illinois,37385,2.6%
ie the 986th largest cisty is in Addison Illinois and has a population of 37, 385 people which equates to 2.6% of US population
If I paste into excel, they all go into one column
Any suggestions re how I could sum the 4th item only?

Select the column with these data.
On the Data tab of the ribbon, click Text to Columns.
Select Delimited, then click Next >.
Tick the check box for Comma and clear the check boxes for other delimiters.
Click Finish.
You should now have the data in separate columns, and you can sum the population figures.
