Add option to turn off automatic date

Simple, stop doing that. add an option to stop making a date from whatever is in the cell.

or even better, turn that automatic stuff off by default. and MAYBE add an option to make it automatic.

If I type 10-17 in a cell, i want 10-17 to appear, not something else. if i wanted something else, i'd just type that.

i would very much like to see in a cell what i wrote, not what excel "thinks" i'd like to see.

who the hell does dates without a year anyway?

it's just so so stupid.

get competent, get user friendly

have a nice day

I do. It's very convenient to simply enter 7/2 and have Excel finish it with the current year. I do this all the time in connection with the dates of various financial transactions.

As noted by Harun24HR you can accomplish what you want by formatting a cell (or a column, or a row) as text.

If, however, you're doing these entries in various spots, the way to do it ad hoc is simply to precede the entry with the single quote mark: '    As in '10-17

Oh yes, I reckon it's very convenient, for you. I'd like microsoft to make it convenient, for everyone. by providing an option (option being the keyword in this thread).

I don't think you are grasping my bother. I'm not looking for backdoor solutions I have to apply every new sheet, but rather a long term solution that excel can remember and that benefits everyone.

Again, I know the apostrophe trick and I know how formatting works. I'm looking for the option to customize the defaults to my needs, not to your needs, not to someone else's needs. And then anyone can customize to their needs.

If your excel finishes the date with the year, and the cell is showing the year, then you chose a format with a year notation. By default (in my version at least), excel doesn't do that. By default, excel only shows day and month.

If you could provide a way to modify the default formatting settings, that would be fantastic.

You just need to format the column or cells as Text. Then enter anything into those cells and Excel will accept input as text.

Sure buddy. We all know we have to format cell to text.

We want the option to change that for all cells in all documents.

      We want default text.

And if I really need a date, I format the cells to date.
