Ongoing sync between Microsoft Edge and Chrome - Discussion
Thanks for your feedback requesting the ability to have ongoing sync between Microsoft Edge and Chrome.
While we recognize this need, we’re currently focused on creating great 1st party sync experiences with your Microsoft account and Work or School account. If you are a Chrome user today, you already have option available to import all your data from Chrome to have Microsoft Edge personalized with all your browsing data.
If you are still looking for ongoing sync between Microsoft Edge and Chrome, please share some more details about your scenario.
- Why would you like an ongoing sync between the two? What problem would it solve for you?
- Do you expect to leverage this ongoing sync only for a short period of time (for instance during initial assessment of Microsoft Edge) or for long period (continue to use multiple browsers)?
- How would the absence of this ability change your perspective on Microsoft Edge adoption?
- Would the creation of a Chrome extension fulfil your requirement?
We will keep you updated as we better understand the needs of our community.
Thanks everyone for sharing your perspective on this topic. It is really helpful to see the sentiments and thoughts towards such a possibility. Please consider this thread closed for now. Stay assured, we are paying attention to everyone's requirements and concerns and are committed to doing the right thing for all of you.

akhator This feature isn't needed. Just improve the existing features for now: Saving form fill, password and syncing then people won't use Chrome anymore.

We implemented Edge for our enterprise environment because Chrome is lacking in configuration aspects we need. However, many of us, myself included still would prefer Chrome for our personal browser. That being said, many of the aspects of how these are used need to stay in sync, or we are constantly having to do double work and do this process manually. That includes the fact, that I'm a web developer and so I'm constantly switching between multiple browsers for testing and research. For us, this would be an ongoing requirement. Without this, I would just use Edge in the most minimal fashion...or possibly we would look into switching to Chrome completely and deal with those issues.
I don't know if a Chrome extension would fulfill this need. I would need to know the scope and functionality.

Why though if I may ask?

I can't speak to why others do, but mine is just a matter of workflow. More importantly, why does it matter? I'm not a fanboy for MS or Google, but I do like Google services more than MS (l use Gmail for my personal email). If I said I wanted to own 2 cars, a Ford and Chevy, why can I not own both?

I would think because of Edge being used in an enterprise environments Microsoft should not and probably will not build any kind of cross browser sync into the Edge browser it's self. A feature like that seems would be a giant security hole for a lot of businesses. For this reason I think your only hope is if an extension can be built that can do the sync totally on it's own with out anything being built into the browser. This way businesses could block it and only individuals that want the extension would install it.
The part about web development I would assume that you would have to test across different browsers any how and I don't see how this would help unless every browser would have the same feature. With that being said I don't do web development so maybe I'm missing something here.
Also it seems that when Edge switched over to being built with Chromium this should have been a major improvement for developers in cross browser testing.

Keep Google out of our beautiful Edge. No Google garbage is the main reason I'm using it, like many people have said before me. So, again: NO. GOOGLE. IN. EDGE.

If people really need it, and if possible, build an extension for Chrome users that will sync up to their Microsoft Account to put/pull data from - Edge users shouldn't have to do anything or install anything.
But I guess I don't really understand the point of the sync between the two in the first place and it looks like that is what you're trying to get from people in this thread.
- DeletedYeah, it dosent' make sense. If you want to use chrome and need sync. Just use chrome.

don't, keep google out of Edge as far as possible.
There might need to use a google account in general, I don't see any useful reason to sync Edge into google.
On the opposite: I'd like to see alternatives to AAD-sync, syncing Edge favorites on premise (as already mentioned by many others).
But keep google out of edge.
- RichRooskiCopper ContributorThis isn't asking for account sync, its got nothing to do with a 'google account', its about copying favourites between folders on your local.
- DeletedI understand, then get a extenstion that does that

Yes please to a Chrome extension that provided connectivity between Chrome and new Edge - to allowed sync'ing of favorites and passwords.
Some of us are "required" to only have one product installed at work, and we use Edge at "home" (PC, Mac, iPhone, Android), and the business we work for doesn't allow new Edge to be installed 😞
Cheers!
- DeletedCan you just ask your admins to allow edge to be installed?

I'm curious if an extension can be built to truly sync users favorites, history, passwords etc. across the browsers without building in Googles hooks into the Edge browser its self. If there is a way to build an extension like this it seems this would be the way to go. This would I think leave people distance them selves from Googles info collection myself included but also enable people that work with both browsers to keep their info in sync.
Forgive me if this is a totally dumb comment. I really have no idea of what functions, permissions, or integrations are needed for an extension like this to work and I'm curious if this is something that can be done.
- DeletedWell, wait, could you just make a extension taht just stores adn sync extenstions. But not with yoru google sync. It;s own sync . Like a extenstion called Sync, that dosent' store or use the ms or google sync data. It just saves and syncs it.
There Is an Icloud extension/Addon for Firefox and when you install it, your bookmarks will be sycned with Icloud and thus Safari browser. I tested it and it was okay, didn't have problems.
Firefox is more secure than Chrome and the policies and tighter, yet that Addon works there perfectly, without adding any Apple related stuff to the browser.
if the same can be done for Edge to sync with Chrome then do it. if it's impossible to do this on a Chromium engine then don't.

- DeletedOr make a general extenstion that uses a causal account. LIke signing up for a account online that stores on their database not google or edge.

Is it really all that hard to add bookmarks and stuff from Chrome to Edge manually? Why do you need to have Edge do it for you? There are many people that don't particularly like Chrome and don't want google services added back to Edge. Why do Chrome users have to be so selfish and have this added? There are other people that use Edge too, like people that originally used Edge. Leave Microsoft Edge as just Microsoft Edge please. Keep Google out.

Mason425 This is a spurious argument; whatever 'Google Services' that are required to perform this operation are ALREADY available in Edge, its just I need to manually push the button(Settings->Bookmarks->Import) . I want it automated so I dont have to push the button.
This operation happens purely on my local machine, its basically copying a file from the Chrome folder, parsing it and then inserting the info into the Edge folder, there are no 'Google Services' involved.

Edge uses de-googled version of Chromium, so those services are not available.
- DeletedYes, I used Edge legacy and new edge since I gotten my surface pro 5. I bared with it even though school uses chrome. Just make Edge your default.

I plead that you don't go through with this. Please just try to make Edge special, and make features that set it apart from other browsers. There are many other Chromium browsers out there that don't associate with Google Chrome, so why should Edge. Leave Chrome and Edge separate. I don't want Edge becoming too similar to Chrome. Edge is Edge, Chrome is Chrome, let it stay that way. This is the only feature that I don't like and don't want to come to the new Edge. And with it being the only feature I don't like, I have very strong feelings against the ongoing sync. I know many people who came from using Edge legacy don't want this. Edge isn't Chrome, deal with it. I don't want Edge to lose sight of everything it stands for. It is a Microsoft (not Microsoft and Google) browser, that has great safety and privacy features. Now Edge is better than ever (at least when set aside tabs, mark up page, and tab previewing is included). Please just leave Google out of this. Not all Chromium browsers have to blend edges with each other. Leave Edge and Chrome as separate things, don't blend the edge between the two.
- DeletedYes, yes. I upvote that. Keep Edge as Edge not Edge Chrome. I like Edge the way it is.
