Inking on Web Pages - Discussion
We have received a lot of feedback about supporting inking annotations for web pages like what we have in the current version of Microsoft Edge. Many users have told us that they use this functionality as a daily driver and would like to see it in the new version of Microsoft Edge as well. We would like to understand the scenarios in which you would use this functionality. Details about what you use it for, what are the expectations about availability of different tools, saving and sharing options etc. would be extremely useful in making sure we provide the best user experience to you. Your input will help us making sure that the feature works best for you.

I use the feature to highlight and crucial text and images, to show others what I mean, IRL and on video calls. To doodle and mess about with I when I'm bored; it allows me to take notes on relevant web pages, underlining and annotating things that I would like to know or remember.
This is a killer feature and its what is holding me from switching from chrome and drawing onto screen sniper.
But there is no point unless there is pressure and rubber end of pen support, not having that is what makes all the chrome extensions useless
I would like to able to save a web page in mid edit and be able to return after a restart like I didn't stop editing so be able to rub out ink from last time.
it would be great if the webpages still functioned fully whilst inking and in saved old inks.
being able to export to png and pdf is necessary.
make it vector-based so the lines aren't super blurry when you zoom in.
and finally, make sure the lines come out smooth and pressure-sensitive (putt in a button in if you have to that makes edge use more resources to make inking smooth), it doesn't matter it has to be done! (by smooth I mean the lines are smooth not having sharp edges not running smooth)

It is a feature that integrated very well with OneNote by allowing editing before saving in OneNote or sharing. The feature highlighted the a seamless integration between other Microsoft software products, in this case OneNote. The extension that is available to install on the new Edge browser is very limited and is not much more than a save / print to OneNote. The extension to the new Edge browser clearly does not highlight any unique Microsoft software products integration feature offered by Edge when compared to other web browsers.

Elliot Kirk I know I'm a little late to the party, but I really wanted to chime in on this discussion. There are a few things I found very useful in Microsoft Edge Legacy that I would like to see added and improved upon in the new Microsoft Edge.
Line Highlighting with OneNote Sync
The inking feature I used the most in Microsoft Edge Legacy was the Line Highlighter in the PDF editor and the ability to add comments to the line highlights. I would like to see this feature but with a sync with OneNote option that would add all the highlighted lines and comments to a OneNote page. It would sync in the background, so as the user highlighted or erased lines, the OneNote page would get updated. I would like to see this feature not just for web pages, but also for the PDF editor and Immersive Reader. This would make it easier to note important information in articles and web pages, especially when working on a school research project.
Inking in the Immersive Reader
I use the immersive reader to read articles without the advertisements or distractions. It would be nice to see inking features added to the immersive reader, including the features I mentioned above. Microsoft Edge Legacy did not have this ability.
Snip and Sketch Tools
Snip and sketch has a nice selection of tools that Microsoft Edge Legacy lacks, like ruler, protractor, and pencil. Adding these features would make inking more useful and would add fluency to the Windows 10 ink experience.
Thanks for you're time,
Winston

My use case for inking web pages is creating a temporary check list that can to be cleared off easily. I been doing Windows 10 upgrades as a Desktop Support technician for the last couple of years. It works really great to open a ticket web page in for apping/building a computer or user data transfer and quickly drop in inking/annotating mode in Spartan/Classic/UWP Edge while on the ticket web page to take notes or use it an informal checklist. One of the biggest benefits of using Edge to ink on webpages is that is built into the operating system and not needing to print to PDF or external program which an approval might be denied because you are a temporary contractor. It also less likely to removed/locked by aggresive enterprises that refuses anything UWP/Modern/Windwo Store Apps.
I will say what has been said before just implement inking on webpages the same exact way it was on Spartan/Classic/UWP Edge minus being locked in to saving only to OneNote.

Regarding inking on Web pages.
A fast, tight and reliable way to send web pages to Onenote would be my prefered option
I know and use the "Clip to Onenote" extention but this is unreliable, and often web pages are not transfered to Onenote.
- That's right, OneNote extension was basically made for 3rd party browsers, not Microsoft's own browser which needs a native and proper way to do it.
- TheShaunSawSilver ContributorIt would be nice to see if the highlighting feature is also added in the inking function.

Elliot Kirk I'm currently a University student who has to read a lot of scientific papers. The inking/highlighting/notes features from the previous Edge's PDF reader were incredibly handy in organizing my notes and thoughts, and I would love to see them returned.

EzeChet, Edge Chromium's PDF Reader does support Inking, Highlighting. In all channels of Edge Chromium (Stable, Beta, Dev, Canary) open a PDF file and at the top you will see a toolbar containing Draw, Eraser, Rotate, Save, Print, Read Aloud, and on the left side a little page number where you can see current page and type in other page you want to go to. Highlighting is also supported, you just need to select text (highlight with mouse), right-click, and in menu you will see highlight in different colors as shown:
Here's a link to the PDF I used in the image, there's a page 4 is a blank page for trying out the tools, and it's an interesting article about Air Pollution and how Ethanol blending in petrol/gasoline helps reduce it by someone working with the U.N.'s Energy Future Coalition (not mine but shared online by original authors so not copyright infringement): http://energyfuturecoalition.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/final_clean-fuelsBOOK.pdf

Elliot Kirk My use cases primarily were research (highlighting, annotations) about certain topics, live drawing on pages to explain stuff and marking/annotating stuff so others could see it.
Sharing:
- as pdf per mail, messenger (best using the people App)
- per link, so other people still can edit it
Saving: as pdf and OneNote
Maybe integrate it with the new collections feature (which I admittedly haven't really used yeat)
What I definitively missed was the option of generating pdfs with a high quality.
Though I could use OneNote for that, it resulted - as far as I can remember - in bad quality.
Further, I would like to have a more direct experience with the webpage -> allow a more seemlinglessly use during browsing, and prevent creating annotations to one webpage multiple times (at least add a option to open the the previous annotations; sometimes, though, it might be desired to have multiple annotation versions)
Additionally, I would like to have the annotations synced.
Lastly, in the old version of Edge, sometimes the generated copy of the page was messed up (although looking fine when viewing the webpage)
The inking experience should be as close as possible to OneNote and also be possible with fingers. The option to add stuff using keyboard and mouse should also be there (for continuing research and editing on the computer).
Thanks for considering!
I would be looking forward to having this again (a little better).
- Reza_Ameri-ArchivedBronze ContributorThis feature is very valuable for touch based devices.
So sometimes I am explaining a website or part of website to someone on tablet Windows 10 and I just open ink and use pen to draw some line and it is more productive that show it with my finger.
It is also cool for UX and UI discussion, so let say there is a website and they asked me for feedback on UI and UX, so I just draw some lines and say we need to do this and that and they save it. In past they get screenshot and I use snipping tool to draw lines and show quick feedbacks.
It would be nice to have option of writing text or handwriting recognition, because my hand writing is not so well 🙂 , and some people have hard time to read it.
This is super feature for touch mode and tablet but it shouldn't limited to touch. - TheShaunSawSilver ContributorIt would be nice to see if functions of undo and redo are added in upcoming web notes feature of Microsoft Edge Chromium.
