Edge Transparent Menus

The new transparent menus in Edge are not usable.  When I right click on something I can see the transparent menu appear, but I cannot read any of the text on the menu.  I have no idea what the selections or options are.  The same problem happens when I click the ... to get to the settings menu in Edge.  If I'm working on a dark background then I can read the menu, but on a light or white background the menu is completely unreadable.  What can I do to either reduce transparency or change the color of the right-click menu and other menus in Edge?

  • I was going nuts on this one as well. It must not look as bad for some people. I could not read the text at all with it on. I found a solution to turn the new feature off. Go to edge://flags and look for a setting called "Enable Windows 11 Acrylic effect in menus" change the setting to Disable and you should be good to go. I have not noticed if "Enable Windows 11 Mica effect in title bars" is causing any issues or not.

    Surfac Pro X
    Windows 11 RTM
    Edge Stable 102.0.1245.33

"Enable Windows 11 Acrylic effect in menus" - Default = Enabled. If I want to disable it, I need to set it to Disabled, but it works as expected for me. A slight transparency, menus are still useable.

"Enable Windows 11 Mica effect in title bars" was set to Default, when I Enabled it and restarted the browser the option completely vanished 🤷‍. It looks like it's been removed. I no longer have the flag:

Edge 99.0.1150.46 (64 bit) just updated - Windows 10 Enterprise
As of today the problem is still there.
Setting "Enable Windows 11 Acrylic effect in menus" to "Disabled" solves the problem (even on Windows 10)
    or
Setting "Choose ANGLE graphics backend" to "D3D11on12" solves the problem.

    Bye

I have to rectify: "Enable Windows 11 Acrylic effect in menus" does not solve the problem on Windows 10.

Hey, It does solve the problem in the menus but it does not solve it in dropdowns. So it works only partially - at least for me. The Choose ANGLE graphics backend -> D3D11on12 setting worked for me for both menus and dropdowns. And it works in both Win10 and Win11 VMs. Looks like D3D may need some touches on the hypervisor. Possibly (untested) disabling 3d acceleration in the hypervisor could help here as well.

TallTomD I use high contrast - I always have a black background and enlarge everything in advanced system settings, so I do not use the default settings see here: https://betterscapeslv.com/

Just changing the "Choose ANGLE graphics backend" to D3D11on12 resolves the issue for me. How do you guys find this stuff!!
      Thank you

Of course, you can change the theme color in the Edge settings and that should help, but I suggest a new Windows theme - you can download it in the Microsoft Store - please write what you think?

Deleted  Unfortunately changing the theme doesn't really help:

As you can see above the transparent settings menu is not usable even with a different theme.  It is a little better in light mode, but not much.  Apparently this problem could be related to me running Edge inside a VM on VMware Workstation?

I'm still looking for a solution.

I had the same problem with Edge running inside a VM on VMware. VM is running Windows 10. The fix by Tidester sorted it. I have no issues with Edge on Windows 10 or Windows 11 running on a host laptop.
