Dev channel update to 89.0.731.0 is live

Hello Insiders!  Today we’re releasing build 89.0.731.0 to the Dev channel.  This will be our last scheduled release to Dev, Beta, and Stable for the year, although we may publish small fixes if necessary, and Canary will continue through the holidays.  For more details, see https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/discussions/a-few-updates-from-the-microsoft-edge-team/m-p/1977784.  We’ve got lots of exciting things to talk about too!

As for what’s new in the product:

Added features:

  • Added an indicator to show when a tab has been muted because the underlying system audio has been muted.
  • Added an option to Settings to disable downloading Edge updates over metered connections.  Note that this is currently only available on Windows 10.
  • Added a Setting to disable the F12 entry point to the Dev Tools.
  • Added support for forcing popup windows into new tabs instead in Kiosk mode.
  • Enabled support for the management policies from Chromium to Enable Basic Auth Over HTTP, and that Target Blank Implies No Opener.

Improved reliability:

  • Fixed an issue where Edge can’t open.
  • Fixed an issue where Edge doesn’t shut down properly or install updates if certain extensions are installed.
  • Fixed an issue where searching from the new tab page sometimes crashes the browser.
  • Fixed a crash when downloading files.
  • Fixed a crash on Mac when checking for updates.
  • Fixed an issue on Mac where closing a popup menu sometimes crashes the browser.
  • Fixed an issue where playing Dolby Vision media on Netflix sometimes crashes with error D7361-1253.
  • Fixed an issue where opening a page in Immersive Reader sometimes fails.
  • Fixed an issue where the Pinning Wizard doesn’t open.

Changed behavior:

  • Added a delay to the Shy UI between when the mouse leaves it and when it disappears.
  • Fixed an issue where items can’t be added to Collections when using Immersive Reader.
  • Fixed an issue where closing a tab sometimes causes a gap between the rest of the tabs and the new tab button.
  • Fixed an issue on Mac where Edge sometimes takes over the screen when an update notification is shown.
  • Fixed an issue where the option to always translate a page sometimes doesn’t work.
  • Fixed an issue where selecting a password in the autofill flyout sometimes puts the wrong password in the field when multiple passwords are available.
  • Fixed an issue where the Coupons prompt appears in the Address Bar, but no comparisons are shown in the flyout.
  • Fixed an issue where text notes on PDFs sometimes can’t be dragged to another position.
  • Fixed an issue where the profile picture in Settings is sometimes broken.
  • Fixed an issue where opening the Favorites or history menu when their buttons are hidden from the toolbar sometimes causes the buttons to stay on the toolbar.
  • Fixed an issue where Edge’s update status in Settings sometimes isn’t shown on Linux.
  • Deprecated the management policy to Allow Popups During Page Unload.
  • Obsoleted the management policies to Send Site Info To Improve Services and Enable Metrics Reporting as they have been replaced by the policies for Diagnostic Data and to Allow Telemetry, as well as to Force the Legacy Default Referrer Policy.

Known issues:

  • Certain extensions such as the Microsoft Editor extension don’t work on Linux.  As soon as they’re installed, they crash and are disabled.  We’re currently investigating.
  • Users of certain ad blocking extensions may experience playback errors on Youtube.  As a workaround, temporarily disabling the extension should allow playback to proceed.  See https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/articles/known-issue-adblock-causing-errors-on-youtube/m-p/14... for more details.
  • Some users are still running into an issue where all tabs and extensions immediately crash with a STATUS_INVALID_IMAGE_HASH error.  The most common cause of this error is outdated security or antivirus software from vendors like Symantec, and in those cases, updating that software will fix it.
  • Users of the Kaspersky Internet Suite who have the associated extension installed may sometimes see webpages like Gmail fail to load.  This failure is due to the main Kaspersky software being out of date, and is thus fixed by making sure the latest version is installed.
  • Some users are seeing favorites get duplicated after we made some previous fixes in that area. The most common way this is triggered is by installing the Stable channel of Edge and then signing into it with an account that has already signed into Edge before.  This issue should be reduced now that automatic deduplication has been introduced into Insider channels.  However, we’ve also seen duplication happen when running the manual deduplicator on multiple machines before either machine has a chance to fully sync its changes, so while we wait for the automatic deduplication to make it to Stable, make sure to leave plenty of time in between runs of the deduplicator.
  • Some users are seeing “wobbling” behavior when scrolling using trackpad gestures or touchscreens, where scrolling in one dimension also causes the page to subtly scroll back and forth in the other.  Note that this only affects certain websites and seems to be worse on certain devices.  This is most likely related to our ongoing work to bring scrolling back to parity with Edge Legacy’s behavior, so if this behavior is undesirable, you can temporarily turn it off by disabling the edge://flags/#edge-experimental-scrolling flag.

We hope you have very happy holidays, and we’ll see you in the new year!

  • Looks like Smart Copy will come to Dev next year ^^
for Edge insider enthusiasts, the best holiday channel will be canary for sure

    Have a great holiday!

    josh_bodner, I couldn't update Microsoft Edge.

The same screen keeps appearing each time I restart, like, 5 times.

    • Sometimes happens to me on Canary as well, try 1) restarting the computer 2) leave it be for few mins 3) turn off startup boost and try again

You and the rest of the team as well.  You've done a remarkable job of moving Edge along this year.

I'm hoping that Edge Linux syncing will be enabled relatively early next year, and I'm hoping that Edge Linux will, when stable, be released as a Snap and/or a Flatpak as well as .deb and .rpm packages.

The need for syncing is obvious -- what purpose would Edge otherwise serve for the target Edge Linux audience, Windows/Linux cross users?  The need for Snap/Flatpak release is less obvious, but it exists because a significant number of Windows/Linux cross users use Linux distributions (e.g. Arch-based distros like Manjaro or independent distros like Solus or Clear Linux) that don't support .deb or .rpm packages.  Almost all Linux distros now support Snap, Flatpak or both.

I'm also hoping that Microsoft will put a platform comparison table on the Edge website at some point, allowing cross-platform Edge users to understand which features are available on each platform, and which are not.  Right now, it is something of a crapshoot to figure out which Windows features are enabled on Android, iOS and Linux, and a comparison table would be a great help.

Yes I would agree. Also for mac as well. It would be great if windwos only features like IE mode or copy and paste would come to mac
  • josh_bodner I saw Smart Copy mentioned on the Welcome page after I updated Dev to 89.0.731.0 but it doesn't look like it's available yet. Is that being slowly rolled out under an experiment?

Also, the CTRL+SHIFT+X keyboard shortcut collides with the default for 1Password's extension. I know the extension shortcut can be customized, but I'm curious if the Smart Copy shortcut can be customized as well. If not it looks like I'll have to retrain the muscle memory for 1Password to something else.

Looks like a great new feature, and I'm looking forward to trying it out. Thanks, and enjoy your holiday break!

schumatt Yup, looks like it's taking a little longer than we anticipated to roll it out to 100% of Dev, but I asked the feature owners when to expect it to be.

I have a feeling that bug I am experiencing has been around for several versions.

I'll try to describe it as best I can.

I am mod on another forum and I have to paste links in posts regularly to direct members to correct parts of the forum. The forum software used to allow members to paste in a link into the edit box, and it will embed that link with information, such as the name of the thread and text of the first post.

    See screenshot 1:

Since a few updates ago, this no longer occurs. Pasting a copied link in to the edit box, simply pastes text with no hyperlink.

    See screenshot 2:

At first I thought this was a forum bug, but I now no it isn't.

If I copy the link from the address bar of Edge and then paste it in to a text file, then copy the link from the text file in to the edit box of the forum, it then correctly embeds the link with all of the information.

It seems as though Edge is adding some kind of hidden characters to the link when copying, so that the link isn't being read correctly.

      Hi,

do you still have that problem if you paste the link as plain text?

from the screenshot, the forum seems to be using IPS software. when I use plain text to paste the link of a thread on a forum using that software, it works as expected (i.e. shows the preview of the thread in the reply area)

That does work, yes. However, that behaviour only started a few versions ago.

I tend to use CTRL + C/V a lot when cutting and pasting, and it would work as normal, so something changed.

I know I can use CTRL + SHIFT + V, but muscle memory plays an important role as well, so it's not something I use.

Either the address bar has some weird hidden chars, or the Cut & Paste is adding something to it.

I don't believe that this is the intended behaviour.

Controlled feature rollouts don't need an update to be turned on/off.
