Dev channel update to 89.0.731.0 is live
I have a feeling that bug I am experiencing has been around for several versions.
I'll try to describe it as best I can.
I am mod on another forum and I have to paste links in posts regularly to direct members to correct parts of the forum. The forum software used to allow members to paste in a link into the edit box, and it will embed that link with information, such as the name of the thread and text of the first post.
See screenshot 1:
Since a few updates ago, this no longer occurs. Pasting a copied link in to the edit box, simply pastes text with no hyperlink.
See screenshot 2:
At first I thought this was a forum bug, but I now no it isn't.
If I copy the link from the address bar of Edge and then paste it in to a text file, then copy the link from the text file in to the edit box of the forum, it then correctly embeds the link with all of the information.
It seems as though Edge is adding some kind of hidden characters to the link when copying, so that the link isn't being read correctly.
Hi,
do you still have that problem if you paste the link as plain text?
from the screenshot, the forum seems to be using IPS software. when I use plain text to paste the link of a thread on a forum using that software, it works as expected (i.e. shows the preview of the thread in the reply area)

That does work, yes. However, that behaviour only started a few versions ago.
I tend to use CTRL + C/V a lot when cutting and pasting, and it would work as normal, so something changed.
I know I can use CTRL + SHIFT + V, but muscle memory plays an important role as well, so it's not something I use.
Either the address bar has some weird hidden chars, or the Cut & Paste is adding something to it.
I don't believe that this is the intended behaviour.- HotCakeXDec 24, 2020MVP
Well, they added this a while ago (couple of months), and I've been using the forums that have the same IPS software for a long time.
right-click works, keyboard shortcut works and also you can set the default behavior to "plain text" and then use the shortcut or right-click for whenever you want to paste as "link".
edge://settings/shareCopyPaste
that would be the old behavior that you can switch back to.
