Dev channel update to 83.0.474.0 is live
Hello insiders, today we’re releasing build 83.0.474.0 to the Dev channel. Believe it or not, this is actually going to be one of the last builds for major version 83, in accordance with our updated release schedule here: https://blogs.windows.com/msedgedev/2020/03/20/update-stable-channel-releases/. We’ve also got a nice long article here detailing our work on scrolling: https://blogs.windows.com/msedgedev/2020/04/02/scrolling-personality-improvements/. As for everything else that’s worth mentioning:
Added features:
- Added the ability to show which folder a favorite is in when you search for a favorite on the Favorites management page and then right click a result.
- Added the ability to create a list of sites that are exempt from the deletion of cookies when the browser is configured to delete browsing data upon closing.
- Added an option to use quieter website notifications that don’t show unprompted popups.
- Added a search box to the Mac Touchbar when there is only one tab open.
Improved reliability:
- Fixed an issue where typing in the address bar sometimes crashes the browser.
- Fixed a crash when closing the browser.
- Fixed an issue where the browser sometimes crashes when showing the Guided Switch popup.
- Fixed an issue where exporting a Collection to Word sometimes crashes the browser.
- Fixed an issue where exporting a Collection to Excel sometimes crashes the browser.
- Fixed an issue where the browser sometimes crashes on launch when Application Guard is enabled.
- Fixed an issue where navigating in an Application Guard window sometimes crashes the browser.
- Fixed an issue where the Downloads management page sometimes crashes.
- Fixed an issue where attempting to use the F12 Dev Tools in a language that’s different than the browser’s language sometimes causes the Tools to fail to launch.
- Fixed an issue where websites sometimes hang when trying to load if Information Protection is enabled.
Changed behavior:
- Fixed an issue where feedback screenshots are all black if the media autoplay blocking setting is set to Block.
- Fixed an issue where menus like the … menu are sometimes displayed incorrectly near screen edges.
- Fixed an issue where typing in the address bar while the left mouse button is pressed results in characters not being properly typed.
- Fixed an issue where a tab that’s restored after restarting the browser will navigate to the same page when the back button is clicked if the page that was restored was blocked by SmartScreen before the browser restart.
- Fixed some issues around interacting with windows for websites that are pinned to the Taskbar.
- Fixed an issue where websites that should be viewed in IE mode are sometimes opened in regular tabs instead.
- Fixed an issue where Guest mode is still available when the Force Sign In management policy is enabled.
- Fixed an issue where an image sometimes won’t be added correctly to an item in a Collection and instead it will just show a loading spinner.
- Improved messaging when using the Command+Q keyboard shortcut on Mac. See https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/articles/macos-blog-improved-messaging-on-the-command-q-alert/m-p/1276450 for more details.
Known issues:
- Some users are seeing favorites get duplicated after we made some previous fixes in that area. The most common way this is triggered is by installing the Stable channel of Edge and then signing into it with an account that has already signed into Edge before. Fixing this should be easier now that the deduplicator tool is available. However, we’ve also seen duplication happen when running the deduplicator on multiple machines before either machine has a chance to fully sync its changes, so while we wait for some of the fixes we’ve made to come to Stable, make sure to leave plenty of time in between runs of the deduplicator. We hope that this will be improved once version 81 is released to Stable.
- Some users are seeing high CPU use in tab or extension processes. Usually, ending the process, for example via Task Manager, reduces the CPU use back down to normal. We are currently investigating, and a set of steps to reliably reproduce this behavior would help us if anybody has some.
- After an initial fix for it recently, some users are still experiencing Edge windows becoming all black. Opening the Browser Task Manager (keyboard shortcut is shift + esc) and killing the GPU process usually fixes it. Note that this only appears to affect users with certain hardware and is most easily triggered by resizing an Edge window.
- Some users are seeing “wobbling” behavior when scrolling using trackpad gestures or touchscreens, where scrolling in one dimension also causes the page to subtly scroll back and forth in the other. Note that this only affects certain websites and seems to be worse on certain devices. This is most likely related to our ongoing work to bring scrolling back to parity with Edge Legacy’s behavior, so if this behavior is undesirable, you can temporarily turn it off by disabling the edge://flags/#edge-experimental-scrolling flag.
- There are some issues where users with multiple audio output devices sometimes don’t get any sound from Edge. In one case, Edge becomes muted in the Windows Volume Mixer and unmuting it fixes it. In another, restarting the browser fixes it.
- At certain zoom levels, there is a noticeable line between the browser UI and the web contents.
We appreciate your patience as we work through these trying times!

Bug : Help and Feedback >> Report site as safe crashes the browser instantly.

drvortex this crash should be fixed in this week's Dev.

I am using the latest DEV and the sites I setup are not being retained after browser closure. I have created my list twice now. Once the browser is closed the list is not retained.
- josh_bodnerSilver Contributor
TrafGib just to be clear, which list of sites are you talking about that aren't getting saved when you close the browser?
- TrafGibIron Contributor
Privacy & Services > Clear Browsing Data > Cookies & Other Site Data > Do Not Clear
The domain names that I manually add here disappear on browser restart. For example, if I add [*']live.com to the list, it remains as long as the browser is running. Exit & start the browser again and the list is empty.

Hello,
do we need to manually wildcard them?
because I set them only like:
- Microsoft.com
- live.com
- Microsoftonline.com
- Office.com
and Edge automatically whitelists all subdomains, at least it seems that way.
- leo_007Copper ContributorThree days without any significant high CPU usage. Problem solved for me since the Dev channel update 83.0.474.0. Thanks.
- Stephen BerardCopper ContributorSame here. This week's build seems to have addressed the high CPU issue with extensions. I've not had an issue in almost two days.

Hello josh_bodner!
Thanks for the latest Microsoft Edge Canavary updated version.
But I think Microsoft Edge Canavary should add some features as follows:
1.The translator should see the situation on the website and then translate it into another language. (Example: "Microsoft Edge Insider" in English translate into Vietnamese is "Microsoft cạnh Insider". In Vietnamese "Edge" is "cạnh", but in that situation It shouldn't translate because "Microsoft Edge Insider" is the name)
2.The translator should have an option that can translate the words in the image on the website. It shouldn't just translate the words on the website.
3."Read aloud" feature also should read the words in the image.
4.The translator should translate multi language on the website into one language.
(Example:"Download" in English next to "アプリ" in Japanese translate into Vietnamese is "Tải ứng dụng")
- Reza_Ameri-ArchivedBronze ContributorThank you for sharing, related to CPU usage, I personally notice it is mostly happens in AMD and older Intel CPU. I advised users to send feedbacks so you could investigate.
If anyone interested in look deeper into what might causing the high usage in CPU, you may use Process Monitor and Process Explorer:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/procmon
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/process-explorer
These tools are good for technical people and if they want to do deep analysis , but generally it is better to send feedback.- Stephen BerardCopper Contributor
This is happening on a Surface Laptop 3 (Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1065G7 CPU). As I mentioned, this is occurring in the extension process. In my case, The Great Suspender.
With that said, this week's build seems to be better in this regard. In last week's build this was happening 100% of the time. Now I'm seeing it much less (though I've only been using the new build for less than 24 hours).

I am observing number of PCs and it is not happening all the time, does it happens for all websites? If possible try Microsoft Edge in Safemode with Networking and see if problem persist?
Make sure submit feedback , because it also send log files so Microsoft Edge teams could investigate.
- Edge browser's built-in task manager is better, it breaks the process into more detailed parts, each extension, each tab etc.
- Reza_Ameri-ArchivedBronze ContributorTask Manager in Microsoft Edge is great for internal investigation but sometimes it is an issue with the main Microsoft Edge process and external dependencies, for example recently, I was investigating performance issue and it was conflict with old driver with Microsoft Edge browser and in such a case we couldn't use task manager inside Microsoft Edge.
However, if there is need to investigate process of Microsoft Edge and internal extensions and website, internal task manager is good tool.

"Added the ability to show which folder a favorite is in when you search for a favorite on the Favorites management page and then right click a result."
Great, this is handy. One observation: in two-panel view, it highlights the folder in the tree, but doesn't expand the tree to reveal that folder. Was this by design? E.g. because expanding the tree was judged to be jarring?
Also, could we have an option to show the parent folder in the results list? It could be incorporated into the responsive-layout behavior and only show when the window is wider than x-amount, e.g. the current max-width for the results lines. A button to collapse the left panel would help with narrower windows to add space for extra column. Toggling it on/off could be a check-item under Remove duplicate favorites in the ellipsis menu.
That way, when re-organizing items, or finding mis-filed items, we could see at a glance where things are without clicking into each one. Perhaps just the name of the leaf folder and not the full path to it would be sufficient (tool tip with full path?).
Example use case: as an IT administrator, I have an extensive list of links at work for network devices, admin portals, etc. and it can be a challenge to manage.

Not sure I like the scrolling so far but progress is being made! For reference I am using windows 10 pro and a mouse for testing. The best way I can describe how I feel about the scrolling so far would be something like this:
- Smooth Scrolling and Edge Personality turned off - This feels similar to hopping down a page, a chunk at a time.
- Smooth Scrolling and Edge Personality turned on - This feels like you hit each notch in your scroll wheel of your mouse, the distance the page travels between each notch is smooth but kind of suddenly stops when you hit the next notch. This is better than the default scrolling behavior but feels a bit too bumpy or jerky to me, unless you are scrolling quickly with the mouse wheel (spinning it multiple times).
Ultimately what I would like to see is the scrolling end in a smoothed out animation instead of a sudden stop, I feel with the ending being smoothed out it would feel less jarring when scrolling using a mouse.
Just my 2 cents on the scrolling so far. Keep up the good work!
- XRaiderv18Copper Contributorhigh cpu usage:
sometimes on sites with mixed media that includes 'streaming elements' eg video/audio, this can happen even if the video is stopped, or closed out.
on pages like google docs, it can happen if the page(s) are open for awhile, eg longer than an hour.
I've seen this happen on amazon.com product pages and search results pages.
there appears to be no direct triggering event or sequence, it just appears to happen out of nowhere.- Stephen BerardCopper Contributor
Yes, I have seen this too (though less with Edge vs. Chrome). However, the behavior I outlined above is different from this. I'm seeing high CPU with extensions like The Great Suspender on a regular basis since the update from last week. When I look in Task Manager I can cleanly see one edge.exe process consuming an entire CPU core. Killing that fixes the problem (and I get a message that The Great Suspender crashed). In short, I'm fairly certain what I'm seeing is a new problem.
- XRaiderv18Copper Contributor
Stephen Berard I'm seeing this with or without any extensions...
one example..I noticed adblock plus, normally the most benign extension I've ever used, as eating a whopping 70% of my pc's cpu..I went into the extensions and disabled it briefly, and the usage dropped back to sane levels.
I ran two days without ANY extensions, and saw the cpu usage on a 'static content' page on Fanfiction.net go into orbit.its something in the browser that was introduced two version changes ago.
- Stephen BerardCopper Contributor
I've experienced issues with high CPU when running extensions. This happens reliably with The Great Suspender extension for Chrome (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/the-great-suspender/klbibkeccnjlkjkiokjodocebajanakg). This was happening regularly with the previous Edge Dev build on 64-bit Windows 10. I can repro this by opening up a number of tabs (e.g. 10) and leaving them idle until The Great Suspender suspends a number of the tabs. Message me directly if you want more exacting steps or details.
