The Case of the Self Uninstalling Office 365

My team and I have an issue that we cannot find a fix for. For what appears to be a random occurrence, we see a number of machines in our network where Office 365 will uninstall itself. We have scoured the internet trying to find a solution and although we see lots of people mentioning that this happens, the answers do not seem to fix the issue. A bit about our setup:

  1. The image we use for our machines has Office 365 preinstalled

  2. We are registering our machines into Intune but so far all Intunes is doing is tracking the devices

  3. We are also on a hybrid system for AD/AAD

  4. We have one Microsoft 365 for Windows 10 setup to push O365 but only two machines are in that group and although those 2 machines are getting Office removed, there a plenty of other people getting Office removed that are not in that group.

  5. We did try a clean uninstall of Office from one of the machines but the issue persisted and a few days later it installed itself.

  6. Most everyone is working from home and typically does not connect to the company infrastructure via VPN unless they have to.

  7. Of course, we have tried many of the solutions posted throughout the Net without finding a solution.

If anyone has seen this as well and has a solution I would very much like to hear it.

After thorough investigation, the root cause was identified as 'too many chefs in the kitchen.' Essentially, someone created a push for Teams to our Windows 365 cloud PCs and mistakenly set it to push to all users in the group. Consequently, Teams were installed on any machine the user logged into, inadvertently causing the removal of Microsoft 365 Apps. The confusion was compounded by the fact that the two machines where we tested the Microsoft 365 app push were also receiving the Teams app, which uninstalled Microsoft 365 App and then Intune would installed it back, further complicating the situation. However, once we removed the Teams app, the issue was resolved.

We are facing same issue with o365 apps getting uninstalled leaving Outlook and Teams intact. We are pushing Teams through Intune to all group members but in addition to it end users are downloading the o365 apps from office portal too.

Where do we get to see that its Teams that causing the issue. Are there any logs created for same where we can find the exact reason whats causing uninstalling of o365 apps.

Any help on this will be appreciated.

There could be several reasons why Office 365 is uninstalling itself on some machines in your network. Here are some of the situations I have seen:

    1. Operating system updates: Some operating system updates can cause compatibility issues with Office 365, leading to the program uninstalling itself.

    2. Corruption of the Office 365 installation: If the Office 365 installation files are corrupted, the program may be unable to run properly and may uninstall itself.

    3. Conflicts with other software: If other software installed on the machine is conflicting with Office 365, it may cause the program to uninstall itself.

    4. Insufficient disk space: If the machine does not have enough disk space to run Office 365, it may uninstall itself to free up space.

To resolve the issue, you can try the following steps:

    1. Check for updates: Ensure that all software, including the operating system and Office 365, is up to date.

    2. Repair the Office 365 installation: You can use the Office 365 troubleshooter to repair the installation or reinstall Office 365.

    3. Check for conflicts with other software: Uninstall any conflicting software and see if the issue persists.

    4. Ensure sufficient disk space: Check the disk space on the machine and make sure that there is enough space for Office 365 to run.

I have seen this occur the most from insufficient disk space so I would look there...

      Thank you, Mark.
We have attempted a few of these solutions on the laptops experiencing this issue but have not reviewed conflicting software and will look at that next.
