Today we announced the new Copilot app, bringing together how people assist, delegate, build, and automate work in one experience powered by Work IQ.

Because Work IQ grounds these experiences in your work and organizational context, the quality and structure of knowledge behind them matters more than ever. The better that content gets, the better Copilot gets: in Microsoft evaluations, responses in the Copilot app improved by an average of 17 percentage points when the underlying content had been enriched and structured by Copilot.

That’s why over the past year we’ve invested in Copilot’s content experiences and tools – both in the Copilot app and inside the content repository itself with the Copilot in SharePoint preview. In just the past month, millions of users have tried this preview, applying it to real-world challenges to translate complex content into tangible business value and accelerate their organization’s AI transformation.

See Copilot in SharePoint in action, from asking questions of your content to building reusable skills your teams can share.

And now, we’re taking that further by building these AI-native SharePoint tools and enriched data into the Copilot app and in the Work IQ APIs, going beyond traditional Graph API retrieval to help Copilot better understand and act on organizational content.

Preview customers are already seeing the impact. At MAIRE Tecnimont, engineers transformed technical documents into structured results in minutes instead of hours. Tourism and Events Queensland is transforming contract lifecycle management, standardizing contract creation and improving visibility into contract information and approval status. And Microsoft's own legal team reduced contract review from a 72-hour outside counsel SLA to 10 minutes.

These outcomes reveal a foundational step on the path to becoming a Frontier Firm: structure organizational content so AI can understand it, act on it, and continuously optimize business processes. Copilot in SharePoint can do much of that work automatically, with deeper enrichment just a few prompts away.

Today we're excited to announce three things:

  • The tools that power Copilot in SharePoint are being built into the Copilot app, Copilot Studio, and Work IQ tools, supporting integrated content intelligence and business processes across Microsoft 365.
  • Copilot in SharePoint has reached general availability, rolling out to worldwide tenants starting September 30.
  • Copilot in SharePoint now aligns with Microsoft’s new hybrid billing model, keeping everyday AI capabilities within the Microsoft 365 Copilot license while using standardized Copilot Credits for large-scale and advanced AI tasks.

The community is also showing what is possible. Explore these demos and tutorials from SharePoint MVPs and Microsoft experts:

Powering faster business outcomes and better Copilot experiences

Our preview and Microsoft evaluations show the impact of richer, more structured organizational content across two areas: faster business processes and improved Copilot outcomes.

  • Faster business processes: Across 10 co-build scenarios with customers, Copilot in SharePoint saved an average of 67.7 hours compared with the previous processes, a 95.7% reduction in time spent on document workflows.
  • Improved Copilot outcomes: Robust evals across six industries (graph below) show Copilot’s accuracy improved an average of 17 percentage points when working with content enriched and structured by Copilot in SharePoint.

The examples below highlight four of the evaluated scenarios and show how richer, more structured content improved Copilot retrieval across legal, sales, finance, and manufacturing use cases.

Legal (+22 points). Copilot in SharePoint identified qualifying NDAs with greater precision, increasing accuracy from 67% to 89% and supporting a more complete, auditable inventory.

Sales (+19 points). Copilot in SharePoint surfaced relevant reseller agreements in seconds, increasing accuracy from 75% to 94% and expanding the pool of potential sales opportunities.

Finance (+15 points). Copilot in SharePoint applied industry-specific rounding rules to increase accuracy from 77% to 92% and resolve discrepancies.

Manufacturing (+15 points). Copilot in SharePoint verified certificates correctly and applied versioning guidelines, increasing accuracy from 80% to 95% and giving reviewers stronger evidence for compliance audits.

Driving real-world impact for organizations

Organizations putting Copilot in SharePoint to work

Organizations are using Copilot in SharePoint to understand and enrich content—and increasingly to build agentic solutions.

Accenture is building a solution on Copilot in SharePoint to make its customer evidence — case studies, references, and win stories spread across teams — easier for employees to find and reuse. Lucy Bone, Global IT Storytelling Enablement Technologies Lead at Accenture, explained:

MAIRE Tecnimont is using Copilot in SharePoint to help engineers work more efficiently with complex technical documentation. By applying specialized AI skills to analyze engineering drawings and specifications, teams can transform unstructured content into structured insights in minutes rather than hours:

Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) is using Copilot in SharePoint to standardize contract creation and turn contract data into a connected, automated source of information for reporting, approvals, and downstream processes:

Microsoft as Customer Zero

We’re putting these capabilities to work inside Microsoft, too. Microsoft teams are using Copilot in SharePoint to transform complex, expert-driven processes.

Microsoft’s legal team is using Copilot in SharePoint as an initial step in its contract-review workflow, reducing a process previously managed under a 72-hour outside counsel SLA to approximately 10 minutes for automated analysis, followed by no more than one hour for validation and audit by qualified legal professionals. Outputs remain subject to applicable confidentiality, privilege, and data-handling controls.

Microsoft Investor Relations is using Copilot in SharePoint to accelerate quarterly earnings preparation, assembling citation-backed data packs in approximately 12 hours instead of 12 weeks while preserving the source-citation audit trail required for review.

If you'd like to explore how Copilot in SharePoint can help solve a real business challenge in your organization, apply for the Co-build program and work directly with Microsoft to bring a solution from concept to production.

Try Copilot in SharePoint in your own content today, or take it for a test drive in the guided simulation below:

Scaling AI with Microsoft Copilot’s hybrid business model

As organizations expand from personal productivity to AI-powered business processes, they need a way to start broadly, scale confidently, and pay for advanced capabilities only when they're used. That's why Copilot in SharePoint now aligns with Microsoft's hybrid business model for AI experiences.

  • Included with your Microsoft 365 Copilot license: The everyday work capabilities customers have been using throughout preview remain included. Users can continue asking questions grounded in your content, creating and organizing content, building reusable skills your teams can share, and enriching content with AI-generated metadata that fills in over time. Deterministic workflows are included with your license as well — automations that trigger on a column change or a schedule follow the rules you set, running on SharePoint's workflow engine.
  • Powered by Copilot Credits: When you scale out your work with Copilot in SharePoint to operate across large content collections and complete multi-step tasks on your behalf, you’ll need to use Copilot Credits. New advanced capabilities to Copilot in SharePoint also require Copilot Credits, such as image generation and editing directly in document libraries and sites, AI-generated site analytics reports, and metadata autofill that runs in near real-time.

Users with usage-based billing enabled are prompted to confirm if they would like to use Copilot Credits when running advanced AI-powered tasks. Final user experience may differ.

Turn on usage-based billing to unlock scale. Usage-based billing activates Copilot Credits. With it enabled, users can choose to spend credits on the advanced capabilities and large-scale agentic work described above. Admins control who can access these experiences through spending policies in the Microsoft 365 admin center. Admins new to Copilot Credits will need to create a cost management policy in the Microsoft 365 admin center, whereas existing cost management policies may automatically include newly available services. Users are prompted to confirm before Copilot Credits are consumed in Copilot in SharePoint.

What’s next for AI across SharePoint and Copilot

More AI capabilities across SharePoint and OneDrive

We’re bringing new AI-powered experiences directly to the places where people create, organize, find, and work with content:

  • Copilot in OneDrive becomes generally available September 30. Copilot in OneDrive has been rebuilt on the same foundation as Copilot in SharePoint, creating a more consistent experience for creating content, organizing information, and working with files wherever your content lives. Follows same licensing as Copilot in SharePoint.
  • Copilot Search is coming to SharePoint and OneDrive. Copilot Search is becoming the default search experience for Copilot-licensed users across SharePoint and OneDrive. It combines natural language understanding, semantic retrieval, and AI-generated answers so people can ask questions naturally and receive grounded answers drawn from supported content they are authorized to access. AI-generated content may be inaccurate. Rolling out to Frontier Public.
  • New advanced capabilities for Copilot in SharePoint. New capabilities powered by Copilot Credits include image generation and editing directly in document libraries and sites, AI-generated site analytics reports, and metadata autofill that runs in near real time. Available with Copilot Credits for Copilot-licensed users; generally available September 30.

Enhancing the Copilot app and Work IQ tools

SharePoint’s content intelligence and business process capabilities are becoming part of the broader Copilot platform, helping Copilot work with richer organizational knowledge and take action across content.

  • Bringing SharePoint tools into Work IQ. We’re bringing SharePoint’s content and action tools to Work IQ, making it possible for Copilot experiences to tap into SharePoint content intelligence and take action on SharePoint content. We’ll share more details about developer availability in October.
  • New SharePoint capabilities coming to Copilot. SharePoint capabilities are becoming more deeply integrated across the Copilot platform, including experiences in the Copilot app and Copilot Studio. These improvements - across content understanding, lists & library management, metadata operations, and more - are rolling out over the coming months across Chat, Cowork, Code, Autopilots, and Copilot Studio. You don’t need to change your habits to make use of them – these experiences will just get better at understanding SharePoint and OneDrive content and processes.
  • UX components are coming to Copilot: Visual UX components, built on SharePoint Framework, can now render directly within Copilot chat so people can view information, interact with controls, and take action without leaving the conversation. Now in public preview.

A stronger foundation for AI across your organization

Together, these innovations transform content into an active knowledge foundation for AI, helping people, Copilot, and agents create content, automate processes, and take action across business systems.

The result is better outcomes, lower costs, and AI-powered business processes that can scale across the enterprise.

We’re grateful to the customers and community members whose feedback helped us improve Copilot in SharePoint.

Is there a way for site owners to disable or block the Copilot for SharePoint "Reorganize Library" capability on their site?

Along with the concern raised by Grant Jenkins, this remains one of the biggest blockers preventing us from enabling the feature more broadly across our organization. Currently, we only have it enabled on a handful of sites.

As we've previously mentioned, there is currently almost no rollback mechanism when a large-scale library reorganization has been applied. Given the scope and impact of the changes that can be made, allowing any user with a Copilot license and write permissions to a document library to trigger this action introduces a level of risk that many site owners are not comfortable with.

Having a site-level control to disable this capability, while still allowing access to other Copilot in SharePoint features, would significantly increase our confidence in adopting the feature more widely.

    Hi Jeff_Teper ,

We're incredibly excited about Copilot in SharePoint and see enormous potential in what Microsoft is building. It's something we're actively looking to enable in our environment. However, we're disappointed that several key issues raised during the Early Access Program remain unresolved despite being highlighted months ago.

Below are just four examples, all related to the Auto-fill functionality, that we believe customers should be aware of and which Microsoft should prioritize addressing.

    (1) Overwriting Manual Corrections

Auto-fill does a great job in many scenarios, but it isn't always correct. When it extracts incorrect information, users naturally need to manually update the metadata.

The problem is that subsequent Auto-fill runs can overwrite those manual corrections without warning. This creates significant risks where metadata is being used for reporting, compliance, cost allocation, health and safety processes, or other business-critical purposes.

There needs to be a mechanism to either:

    • Respect manual overrides.
    • Require approval before replacing a manually edited value.
    • Provide reporting or auditing that clearly identifies when Auto-fill has overridden a user correction.

Without this capability, organizations may struggle to trust Auto-fill-generated metadata in critical business scenarios.

    (2) Overwriting Version History

This issue was raised several times during testing, and we were advised it had been resolved. Unfortunately, our recent testing indicates it still persists.

For organizations that rely on accurate version history and auditability, this is a serious concern.

In our testing, when Auto-fill updated metadata, it not only reverted manual corrections but also effectively overwrote the previous version history entry. As a result, changes made by users became difficult to track and audit because the most recent version was replaced by an AI-generated update.

We strongly recommend customers validate this behavior in a test library before deploying Auto-fill across production content.

There is also another side effect of this behavior. Because Auto-fill appears to overwrite the latest version rather than create a new one, the document retains the original Modified date and time. For example, if a user last updated a document three days ago and Auto-fill runs today, the document can still show it was last modified three days ago even though AI has changed the metadata today. This makes it very difficult to understand when content was actually altered and further undermines the auditability of the solution.

See the screenshots below that show version 3.0 being overwritten by Auto-fill, and Modified date not changing. You can see that it's wiped the Review date entry.

    (3) Multiple Versions Created for a Single Processing Run

When multiple Auto-fill columns are configured, the updates don't appear to be processed as a single transaction.

Instead, each column update can potentially generate its own version, meaning a single processing event can create multiple additional document versions.

    This has two implications:

    • Version history becomes cluttered and more difficult to audit.
    • Storage costs can increase unnecessarily because each version represents another copy of the file.

At enterprise scale, this could have a measurable impact on storage consumption and associated costs. It would be far more efficient if Auto-fill processed all metadata updates together and generated a single version.

    (4) No Support for Files Within Folders

This remains one of the biggest limitations we identified during testing and was highlighted by multiple customers during the Early Access Program.

Currently, Auto-fill only processes files at the level where it is run. If a document library contains folders, files located within those folders are not processed unless users navigate into each folder individually.

For organizations using structured document libraries with multiple levels of folders and sub-folders, which remains a very common information architecture pattern, this significantly limits the usefulness of Auto-fill.

In our environment, this limitation would exclude the majority of our document libraries from practical use.

    SharePoint Search

In addition, it increasingly feels like Microsoft is treating users without a Copilot license as second-class citizens when it comes to search. Users are now presented with completely different search experiences depending on whether they have a Copilot license, including entirely different user interfaces. There is effectively no longer a unified search experience, something Microsoft used to be very proud of. In our view, all users should receive the same core search experience and user interface, with users who have a Copilot license gaining access to additional AI-powered capabilities such as Search Summaries, Search Result Overviews, and other Copilot-enhanced functionality. This concern applies to both Copilot Search and SharePoint Search (to be confirmed once we see the final implementation). Most organizations have a mix of users with and without a Copilot license, and creating fundamentally different search experiences across the workplace only adds confusion, training overhead, support challenges, and inconsistency for end users.

Search remains one of the biggest barriers preventing broader adoption of SharePoint as a true enterprise knowledge platform. We've been forced to use custom solutions (which we do not want to do) or moved some of our content and business processes outside of SharePoint specifically because of limitations in the current search experience and the lack of mature multilingual capabilities (Multilingual is severely lacking across the board - not just search). That's why we're so passionate about seeing the next generation of SharePoint Search succeed.

    Closing Thoughts

To be clear, Copilot in SharePoint is genuinely impressive and has the potential to deliver tremendous value. That's precisely why we're so passionate about providing this feedback.

The foundation is strong, and we absolutely see the benefits. However, addressing these kinds of practical, real-world operational issues would significantly improve customer confidence and help organizations like ours accelerate adoption.
