Editor's note 7/15/2024: this post has been updated twice since it was first published, as we continue to improve the new Outlook for Windows.
The new Outlook for Windows is bringing a wave of...
gigilevens - this isn't an issue with your build number. The issue is that the Gmail account you added to Outlook for Windows is your Google Account. Meaning, an account you setup on Google's websites, with a username and password you've setup with Google. The Microsoft 365 Family subscription you have was purchased with your Microsoft Account. It sounds like you created that with the email address you got from Google. But this is a distinct and different account. Think of a different example - like Netflix. You likely used your Gmail address to create your Netflix account. But those are two distinct accounts from two different companies.
So when you log into Outlook for Windows, you are logging in with your Google Account, to get your Google email and events. That account doesn't have a Microsoft 365 subscription.
Right now, we only support logging in to Outlook for Windows with a Microsoft account that has an Outlook.com email address connected to it. See the FAQ below, that was part of this blog post. We are actively working on a way for you to log into your Microsoft account created with a non-Microsoft email address right now and will likely support that within the next 2 months.
How do I add a Microsoft Account that was created with a non-Microsoft email address to the new Outlook for Windows?
When you create a Microsoft Account, you have the choice of creating an Outlook.com email address or using your existing non-Microsoft email as your username (e.g. Gmail, Yahoo). Currently, the new Outlook for Windows only supports adding Microsoft Accounts with an Outlook.com, Hotmail.com, Live.com or MSN.com email address. You can do this in Settings > Accounts > Email Accounts, or by clicking the "Add Account” button in the bottom of the folder list.
If you purchased a Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription with a Microsoft Account that was created with a non-Microsoft email address, you will need to add an Outlook.com alias in order to connect it to Outlook. To do so, follow the instructions here:How to add an email address or phone number to your Microsoft account - Microsoft Support. You will need to make the Outlook.com alias the primary alias, before you can add it to Outlook.
