Azure API Center enables tracking all of the APIs within an organization in a centralized location for discovery, reuse, and governance. Enterprise developers across the organization need to get seamless access to consume the APIs in an Azure API Center. Not all enterprise developers in an organization have complete access to Azure API Center e.g., access to adding new APIs to the API Center. However, all enterprise developers need access to view API definitions, export API specification documents and generate API clients.

Platform API Catalog enables enterprise developers across the organization to get seamless access to APIs using the Visual Studio Code extension for Azure API Center.  It promotes API discovery, consumption and reuse across the enterprise.

Using the platform API catalog, developers can discover APIs in the Azure API center, view API definitions, and optionally generate API clients when they don't have access to manage the API center itself or add APIs to the inventory. Access to the platform API catalog is managed using Microsoft Entra ID and Azure role-based access control. The platform API catalog helps enterprise developers discover API details and start API client development.

Platform API Catalog enables developers to:

  • Export API specification document - Export an API specification from a definition and then download it as a file
  • Generate API client - Use the Microsoft Kiota extension to generate an API client for their favorite language
  • Generate Markdown - Generate API documentation in Markdown format
  • OpenAPI documentation - View the documentation for an API definition and try operations in a Swagger UI
