Windows Update

Hi, I've got 4 Windows 2022 servers configured for automatic updates using the following Group Policy option on the 3rd Wednesday of each month: 2 - Notify for download and auto install These servers are meant to have Windows updates manually installed by an Administrator. One of those servers stopped reporting to WSUS and it turns out the computer certificate (issued by an internal Microsoft CA) was missing. Once that was resolved, it reported to WSUS correctly. To test, I ran the following commands: usoclient.exe startscan Get-WindowsUpdate Several minutes after running the above commands, Event ID 44 was generated by the Windows Update Client downloading the updates. This was quickly followed by Event ID 43 where it started installing the updates. And about 12 hours later at 11:58PM, Event ID 1074 was generated where svchost.exe on behalf of NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM initiated a reboot. 2 minutes later at 12:00AM, another Event ID 1074 saw TrustedInstaller on behalf of user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM initiated a reboot. And finally at 12:03am, Event ID 19 was generated saying the update was successfully installed. Event ID 19 was repeated again 1 minute later. As far as I can tell, usoclient.exe startscan and Get-WindowsUpdate without any options does NOT initiated a download and install of the updates. The other 3 servers behaved themselves until an Administrator went in and downloaded and installed the updates. This 1 rogue server decided to take its own initiative and the only difference from the other 3 is the missing computer certificate which was subsequently restored. Any pointers as to how this could happened would be much appreciated. Thanks.33Views0likes1CommentWindows Insider Program Issue
I was exploring the Windows Insider Program settings and noticed a channel called Canary. Out of curiosity, I switched to the Canary channel, which prompted an update. After completing the update and restarting my PC, I noticed some things seemed off, and certain features weren’t functioning properly. When I tried to switch back to the Dev or Beta channels, I realized I wasn’t allowed to change channels from Canary. I’d appreciate your help in resolving this issue without resetting my PC.57Views0likes1CommentWindows Server update keeps promptiing to install

Starting yesterday after a cumulative update installed in windows update, I started having an issue where I couldn't access zip files because the instant I would click or right click on one it would crash explorer and cause it to restart. I could open them by starting 7zip or winrar manually but oddly enough if I tried opening them as admin to extract to a protected directory it would again crash explorer and cause it to restart Yesterday I attempted fixing it with sfc /scannow which did find and fix some errors but did nothing to fix the problem I was chasing, so I gave up and put it off to the next day. The update is the only notable change I could think of to attribute the problem to so today I tried to use system restore to roll back the changes and that failed, twice, and on the second time when windows rebooted, it went to a black screen, with the dialog box open saying that the restore had failed, but nothing else ever started. Thinking it had perhaps started in safe mode, I used ctrl/alt/delete to log out and restarted from there, only to return to the same black screen. So now using ctrl/alt/delete to gain access to the taskmanager is the only way I'm able to get an instance of explorer to open so I can open a browser etc. and is the only way I'm able to use the computer at all now. I tried once more to run the sfc /scannow command but it found nothing. I don't know how to start the settings app manually, if it's even able to start at all, to be able to know what build I'm on or what the update number was that started this, so I'm afraid I'm not really able to provide much to go on in that regard. All I know for sure is i must get this rig back into some kind of usable form in order to comb through it and pull out all the things that must be backed up if a OS reinstall is my only way forward, so any help to get my desktop environment back would be a HUGE help and greatly appreciated.174Views0likes2CommentsEstimating Upload Bandwidth in Delivery Optimization
There is a policy(such as DOMaxBackgroundDownloadBandwidth) to control "download" bandwidth in Delivery Optimization (DO), but currently, there is no policy to control "upload" bandwidth. However, according to Microsoft's doc, the cacheable content that an uploading device can peer is limited to four slots. If four peer downloads occur simultaneously and the download bandwidth is limited to 1 Mbps, the upload bandwidth is expected to range from a minimum of 1 Mbps to a maximum of 4 Mbps. Is my understanding correct?181Views0likes2CommentsServer 2016 Windows Update disabled?
I have Windows 2016 and 2019 Servers. All in in the same OU and getting the same Group Policy. This is confirmed via gpresult. I am using GP to disable Automatic Updates. This looks to be working in 2019: But with Server 2016, it says this: Should I expect these servers to update?504Views0likes5CommentsDefine Patch Approvals in WSUS but pull patches from Windows Update (Internet)
We currently use WSUS to distribute Microsoft patches and also use Solarwinds Patch Manager to push 3rd party patches into WSUS. This allows us to fully patch an endpoint with all MS and 3rd party software patches via Windows Update Agent/WSUS. We now have a fleet of laptops connected back to our Datacenter via a VPN and they are consuming a lot of bandwith during patching cycles. We have the following challanges: We do use some throttling on BITS/Delivery opitmization but have had mixed results We have MECM but don't use Cloud Management gatway as was deemed too expensive. we have not moved patching to MECM yet. If we use Windows Update for Business we cannot patch 3rd party updates and loose some control around pilot groups and reporting in our estimation Q: So is there a way for us to continue to define the approved patches/metadata via WSUS but have the system pull the patches files from the internet (Windows Update) source? Perhaps this is possible with MECM?277Views0likes2CommentsWindows 10 and reserved storage
