Windows Update

I was exploring the Windows Insider Program settings and noticed a channel called Canary. Out of curiosity, I switched to the Canary channel, which prompted an update. After completing the update and restarting my PC, I noticed some things seemed off, and certain features weren’t functioning properly. When I tried to switch back to the Dev or Beta channels, I realized I wasn’t allowed to change channels from Canary. I’d appreciate your help in resolving this issue without resetting my PC.57Views0likes1CommentWindows Boots to Black screen, NO Desktop, taskbar, start ,menu
Starting yesterday after a cumulative update installed in windows update, I started having an issue where I couldn't access zip files because the instant I would click or right click on one it would crash explorer and cause it to restart. I could open them by starting 7zip or winrar manually but oddly enough if I tried opening them as admin to extract to a protected directory it would again crash explorer and cause it to restart Yesterday I attempted fixing it with sfc /scannow which did find and fix some errors but did nothing to fix the problem I was chasing, so I gave up and put it off to the next day. The update is the only notable change I could think of to attribute the problem to so today I tried to use system restore to roll back the changes and that failed, twice, and on the second time when windows rebooted, it went to a black screen, with the dialog box open saying that the restore had failed, but nothing else ever started. Thinking it had perhaps started in safe mode, I used ctrl/alt/delete to log out and restarted from there, only to return to the same black screen. So now using ctrl/alt/delete to gain access to the taskmanager is the only way I'm able to get an instance of explorer to open so I can open a browser etc. and is the only way I'm able to use the computer at all now. I tried once more to run the sfc /scannow command but it found nothing. I don't know how to start the settings app manually, if it's even able to start at all, to be able to know what build I'm on or what the update number was that started this, so I'm afraid I'm not really able to provide much to go on in that regard. All I know for sure is i must get this rig back into some kind of usable form in order to comb through it and pull out all the things that must be backed up if a OS reinstall is my only way forward, so any help to get my desktop environment back would be a HUGE help and greatly appreciated.174Views0likes2CommentsEstimating Upload Bandwidth in Delivery Optimization
There is a policy(such as DOMaxBackgroundDownloadBandwidth) to control "download" bandwidth in Delivery Optimization (DO), but currently, there is no policy to control "upload" bandwidth. However, according to Microsoft's doc, the cacheable content that an uploading device can peer is limited to four slots. If four peer downloads occur simultaneously and the download bandwidth is limited to 1 Mbps, the upload bandwidth is expected to range from a minimum of 1 Mbps to a maximum of 4 Mbps. Is my understanding correct?181Views0likes2CommentsDefine Patch Approvals in WSUS but pull patches from Windows Update (Internet)
We currently use WSUS to distribute Microsoft patches and also use Solarwinds Patch Manager to push 3rd party patches into WSUS. This allows us to fully patch an endpoint with all MS and 3rd party software patches via Windows Update Agent/WSUS. We now have a fleet of laptops connected back to our Datacenter via a VPN and they are consuming a lot of bandwith during patching cycles. We have the following challanges: We do use some throttling on BITS/Delivery opitmization but have had mixed results We have MECM but don't use Cloud Management gatway as was deemed too expensive. we have not moved patching to MECM yet. If we use Windows Update for Business we cannot patch 3rd party updates and loose some control around pilot groups and reporting in our estimation Q: So is there a way for us to continue to define the approved patches/metadata via WSUS but have the system pull the patches files from the internet (Windows Update) source? Perhaps this is possible with MECM?277Views0likes2CommentsThrottle Downstream WSUS Update Pull from upstream
Is it possible to throttle the download of updates on a downstream WSUS server i.e. when it is pulling it's updates from an upstream WSUS server? We have some downstream WSUS servers on low bandwidth links and whilst we generally schedule the pull of updates during an out-of-hours window this is problematic for us for several reasons. I'd rather they pull during the day but with throttling. I’m aware the WSUS clients can do this in Windows 10 BITS etc. but wondering can the WSUS server do this on the synchronisation cycles.193Views0likes0CommentsKeyboard stopped working windows updates KB4023057

After applying these two updates, my headphone's audio stopped working. I highly suspect this is related to the recent update, since I was listening audio for the whole afternoon, and after applying the updates in the evening, it stopped working. Meanwhile, I did not install any other software. My headphone is functioning properly (tested on the phone), and the headphone's microphone is functioning on laptop (tested in a recording software, so the 3.5mm interface should not fail). The headphone's audio can be detected in the control panel, but testing it does not output any audio. I could provide more information if needed. Update: Tested on a Fedora 38 usb boot image, the audio works properly, thus the hardware part should have no issue.455Views0likes0Comments
