Hi guys, testing out Storage Migration Service on the latest Windows Admin Center version 2110. At the transfer phase, somehow the Start Transfer button to start the migration is missing. Anyone else facing this? All validation is passed and tested on a few different VMs and its still showing the same. Is this a bug, or am i missing something? Heya folks, Ned here again. We just released an update to the Storage Migration Service extension for Windows Admin Center. It will automatically appear in your WAC feeds in the next few hours. Going forward I'm going to always announce changes to these WAC tools, since the updates don't have release notes built-in. Tool: Storage Migration Service Version 1.42.0 Notes: Now includes a link to the Azure File Sync tool for each migrated server when cutover completes. This means you can click and be sent to a new tab specific to that server and setup AFS on that node. We have a full set of integration planned here, this is just a nugget. No longer show the Azure File Sync popup banner during transfers and cutovers. Transfer and re-transfer now display more understandable messaging, buttons, and choices. Fixes to ensure accurate share inclusion when modifying a transfer mapping Accessibility fixes Thanks, and good hunting on those Windows Server 2008 machines that stop being supported in 7 months! - Ned "January 14, 2020" Pyle6.9KViews1like1CommentStorage Migration Services Issue with scanning and validation
Here's my setup: Source server: Win 2008 R2 that has 5 shares on it (all from the same drive - D Drive). This is my AD and DC and DNS server. Destination server: Win 2019 Std. This is my secondary AD/DC/DNS. I have Windows Admin Center with Storage Migration Services setup. Both computers have 100% of their updates installed. During the project setup for Storage Migration Services - I'm adding and scanning a device (my 2008 R2 server). The scan goes fine, but the state will eventually tell me "Couldn't inventory some devices" - which is strange. I only have 1 device. Maybe it's talking about some folders. When I'm finally at the Transfer Data stage - validate devices: the validation fails with this message: We can transfer data from the source computer at maximum speed. This might fail when required software updates are not installed on the source. Fail: Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component. All the other validations pass. If I attempt to start the transfer, I get this error: Migration-01 : Start transfer : RemoteException: Transfer validation failed or was not run. Fix errors and rerun validation or override this check in Transfer settings. (Migration-01 is the name of the project I'm setting up). Not sure what's going on here. I suspect I need to resolve the first error, but I can't. I haven't found anything online related to this. The error is so generic it doesn't give me any information go really research. Can someone help? I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you2.7KViews1like1CommentStorage Migration Service - Data Transfer Exceptions
Hi We are in the process of migrating data from Windows Server 2012 R2 to Windows Server 2019 (OS Build 17763.864) using the Storage Migration Service. All seems to be going well and we're able to do an initial copy of shares to the destination server. We have some transfer exceptions which are related to GPO redirected folders where users were granted exclusive access to their redirected folders. It seems like the SMS is not able copy data from these folders. Is SMS able to use the same access levels as a backup service to access files for transfer? With reference to the "Known Issues" article, under the heading "Certain files do not inventory or transfer, error 5 "Access is denied" leads me to believe that it does use backup privileges. Since we're running Windows Server 2019 Build 17763.864, as the orchestrator and destination for files, the issue listed in the article should be fixed. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/storage-migration-service/known-issues We have checked and made sure the account being used for the migration is a local administrator in both the source and the destination. Any other ideas? We would preferably not want to have to go through the process of adjusting permissions on the redirected folders to give our account access to those folders. Hope you can assist Thanks very much!1.6KViews1like0Comments
