15 TopicsClassic vs Modern and More Microsoft Search Questions Answered
Over the past several weeks we've had a number of community questions on classic vs modern search in relationship to SharePoint and Microsoft Search across social channels, e.g. Twitter, Facebook, etc. and here in the Microsoft Search community. We've selected the most common questions and have created the Q&A below to help answer those. As Microsoft continues to invest in modern experiences, including search, will existing SharePoint search administration options, such as Query Rules, Schema, Dictionaries, Type-Ahead Suggestions, etc. be deprecated over time or made available in Microsoft Search administration? As we continue the journey of modernizing classic search experiences across SharePoint and other Microsoft Search endpoints, we’ll transition their configuration options (where supported with Microsoft Search) to the unified Microsoft Search admin center in addition to their programmatic model where applicable. Microsoft Search is a cohesive search experience across Microsoft 365 and Bing so does not have affinity to a specific endpoint, such as SharePoint, but shares it’s underlying capabilities across Microsoft 365 apps and services. As a singular search experience across Microsoft 365, configuration options for search will move to the unified search admin console as well as “cleaning up” the search settings when in SharePoint context. Will there be changes to the web parts available to the “classic search” experience as search is modernized and transitioned to Microsoft Search? As Microsoft Search continues to roll out across Microsoft 365 we’ll modernize web parts in conjunction. For example, the Hightlighted Content web part will get an advanced capability to allow the use of KQL and CAML directly. This will help solve a lot of user configured roll-up scenarios. Secondly we are investing in making the modern search result page customizable in terms of custom verticals and the ability to add more refiners. We are also investing in an alternative to display templates, using adaptive cards, which will first arrive for the new custom connectors. If you however need full flexibility on how to display results you may as an example use the PnP Modern Search web parts configuring the search box on a site to land on that page, as announced at SPC. Are there plans to introduce classic search replacements for Refiners, Search Bar, and Display Templates? We are working on providing the capability for custom verticals, custom refiners and the use of adaptive cards for the modern search result page. Is it possible to ingest on-premises content into Microsoft Search, such as the ServiceNow examples shown at Microsoft Build in May 2019? ServiceNow is an example of external data being indexed into Microsoft Search using the new connector framework announced at Build and SPC. Any on-premises content or line of business content can be indexed the same way, much in the way hybrid search works today. Expect a number of connectors coming from Microsoft to support file servers, sql databases and SharePoint, as well as partner offerings. Near term, if using SharePoint on-premises, the cloud search service application (hybrid search) can be used to index across on-premises content and brought into Office 365. As Microsoft Search is a cohesive search experience across Microsoft 365, providing data can be brought into one or more endpoints, as described above, it will be available to Microsoft Search. For additional information on these approaches see also https://resources.techcommunity.microsoft.com/connecting-your-data-into-search-and-services/. I read there is a 20M document limit for documents index using the cloud search service application (hybrid search) with SharePoint on-premises. The limit is not 20 million, but there is a limit depending on the licensing and volume you have available in the tenant. Via a service request this number can be increased today. Is Microsoft Search what had been called Bing for Business? Microsoft Search in Bing (formerly known as Bing for Business) is one of Microsoft Search’ endpoints along with SharePoint, Office.com, Outlook, OneDrive, etc. For ingestion the new connector framework is the way forward, and a new query api is being built via the Microsoft Graph. Is there a relationship between the Microsoft Search pipeline and Microsoft Graph? Yes. Indexing and query will be provided via Microsoft Graph APIs. Will it be possible to ingest content from non-Microsoft sources and enrich that content? Any enriching can be done on the custom connector side before the data is ingested into the Microsoft Search search index. How does Microsoft Search fit within the context of Enterprise Search? Microsoft Search is an Enterprise Search solution. With the new investments to easier ingest your own content, and taking advantage of machine learning across all workloads in the Microsoft Graph to provide best of breed ranking of results for the individual, we believe that if you are using Office 365 as one of your primary data sources, then using Microsoft Search will make it easier for your end-users to get a unified search experience on all their data, across all devices. We are investing in providing the same search results in all user experiences, that be bing.com, SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, Office applications like Word, Excel and PowerPoint, from your Windows 10 desktop search, or from any mobile device. Hello, based on Mikael Svensons Ignite presentation I was eager to learn that you can redirect search queries to a PnP Modern Search results page. Has anyone encountered the issue that it only works for the initial query? So from site collection A I'm entering a query that is passed on to site collection B which hosts the results page. The parameters passed are searchResults.aspx?k=test&ql=2055, for example. I have configured the result source web part to use the page environments query parameter k. The search results web part correctly shows hits for the query. However, I can't get a new query to fire. When I use the out of the box modern page's search box the url in the address bar changes but it's not passed on to the search results web part: When I refresh the browser page the new query is passed on and the web part shows the new results. Is anyone experiencing this behaviour? I though of putting a PnP Modern Search box onto the page for further queries but the results web part can only be connected to one source it seems. According to multiple articles I have read, I should have a menu item called "Microsoft Search" in the Services & Add-ins in Admin Center. But I only have "Microsoft Search in Bing" which only gives me an on/off switch. Where do I configure search? The reason I need to find it, is to look for a possible answer to why some users do not have a search box in the Office 365 top bar, while others do.Solved4.5KViews0likes1CommentMicrosoft Search Vertical for Nintex Promapp how to ?
Hi All, I need help getting Microsoft Search Connector setup to return Nintex Promapp results. Our situation We have had Nintex promapp search results showing up in our Classic SharePoint search results as per https://help.nintex.com/en-US/promapp/Admin/SharePoint/SharePointOnlineSearch.htm BUT since we moved over to SharePoint online Modern search results we have had to get our users to go to Promapp to do their searching. Microsoft Search is increasingly where we control the search experience for our users. https://admin.microsoft.com/Adminportal/Home?source=applauncher#/MicrosoftSearch Just recently Microsoft Search for our tennant has had Connectors, Result types and Verticals enabled. Basically re-enabling the ability for us to include Promapp results in the All search results vertical AND OR to have a Promapp vertical that can be used by our staff. Could someone please tell me how to get Microsoft Search "Enterprise website connector" to return results to Microsoft search. I've got a connector ready, BUT it isn't picking up any items in the index (see image) My guess is that because I used a variation of the URL from our Classic Sharepoint search integration that is why it isn't working. https://go.promapp.com/<companyname>/SharePoint?token=<tokenGUID> Any suggestions , tips , or full blown instructions would be welcome. #nintexpromapp #microsoftsearch #sharepointsearch2KViews0likes4CommentsHow to Show Floor Plan Details in Outlook Card?
Is it possible to show floor plan locations for a user in their Outlook / Teams card like how it shows when you look up the user via Microsoft Search? Below you can see a test user with office location B1/1002. You can't click on it to get more details. However on MS Search (Bing) you can click on the office location to get where it is on the map: Is there any way to extend this functionality to Outlook/Teams? Especially in regards to scheduling meetings, being able to see the floor plan location for a specific conference room account when booking.1.7KViews2likes0CommentsFilter by Author (Created By)
Hi, we are implementing new search (https://microsoft-search.github.io/pnp-modern-search/) but we have met with an issue that can not filter by "Author / Created by". We have tried all ways how to do it: Use system field "Created by" - no success Use managed properties - RefinableStrings - no success You can see screens bellow. Do you have any idea how to set that we can create "Author" as a refiner. It is really important to us. Thank you, Mirek1.5KViews0likes1CommentFinding Expertise in Search
Reading through this article I've discovered the following: "Finding expertise has been a constant challenge, both outside and within organizations. Expertise has long been dependent on self-nomination and identification; however, these skills often aren't verifiable or have aged to the extent to which they're no longer relevant. Available in Q1 CY20 as preview, in Microsoft Search you’ll be able discover instant answers for people results based on their skill matches. Answers are high confidence results that satisfy your intent directly, or help you navigate to your intended result(s) quickly. Answers can be either based on personal, organizational-wide or world content; they can be related to primary content from your current workload such as a file in SharePoint, or could introduce other content from outside of your current workload such as a personal flight answer based on Outlook content appearing in SharePoint." What is the difference between this feature and the currently available feature in Delve for searching based on Skills, Education and Projects?1.1KViews0likes0CommentsSort by title - new search
Hi, we are implementing new search (https://microsoft-search.github.io/pnp-modern-search/). We have list of application and search only within this list. We would like to sort the results by Title (Name of application) but it is not possible because "Title" is not sortable. We have tried to map the "Title" on some "RefinableString" but this field is empty then in results and it is also not possible to filter by this. Do you have any tip, how to fix it? Thank you, Mirek767Views0likes0Commentsbookmark keyword not matching single term in multi term search
Hi Wendy_MSFT and everyone else, I've been using Bookmarks ever since they became available in my tenant. We've tried to stop using SharePoint search best bets and move everything over. BUT When our users do a search with multiple terms e.g. pnid christchurch I would expect that they then see any bookmark with the PNID keyword or any bookmark with the CHRISTCHURCH keyword What I find is that only book marks with keywords that exactly the match the terms used in the search show up. What am I doing wrong ? When our users search from the black bar at the top of the intranet site they are taken directly to the Organizational search (we want them to have a broad search experience) straight away. If they search for PNID they will get the bookmarks I've setup in https://admin.microsoft.com/Adminportal/Home?source=applauncher#/MicrosoftSearch/bookmarks that have the PNID keyword. But if they search for pnid christchurch they don't get shown any bookmark. Is there some setting I can change that makes bookmarks appear when ANY term matches a Keyword in the bookmark ?635Views0likes0CommentsDoes "Microsoft Search" search Exchange?
Bing search for Work, Office 365 search, whatever it's called these days. For a Microsoft 365 organization totally in the cloud (no on-prem), is search supposed to work with Exchange online? For example, visit office.com and enter a search query in the search bar. It finds content across the major apps *except* for Exchange - heck, it even finds conversations in Teams. What am I missing?630Views0likes0Comments
