page numbers in Word documents

For reasons I don't understand, page numbers have disappered from my Word documents. I go to Insert, but "page numbers" is not highlighted and when I click on that, nothing happens

Which version of Word are you running? 

Note that if you have Word for Windows, you can double-click the header area to activate the header/footer view, and then click where you want your page number (in the header or footer) and use Alt+Shift+P to insert a page number field.
