Happy new year.
Can you please provide a sample image for our community to see? The visual of what MS Word is doing (and the PDF) will help us in our diagnoses.
In the meantime, try using Show/Hide and see if it shows any unusual formatting cues that we can look at (post screenshots please). This is an example.
