Custom XML in Word and co-authoring

Looking for an answer if Custom XML is supported in co-authoring scenarios. I've a customer who uses Custom XML in a Word Add-in and they are seeing that their Custom XML gets duplicated in Word when they are using co-authoring. The Custom XML data is bound to content controls in the document.
