Back button opens a new Read-Only document

The issue is only affecting one document, which is about 400 pages long. I use a lot of cross-references, so I have a Quick Access shortcut for the "Back" button to go back to my previous view before I clicked the cross-reference. For some reason, this document's Back button doesn't return to the previous view and instead opens a read-only version of the same document. Any ideas? Thanks.

  • hbear655 Did you use some code to cause the selection to move from the target of the cross-reference back to the cross-reference field?  If so, what was that code?  If you did not use code, how did you achieve it originally.

Doug_Robbins_Word_MVP - Thanks for your reply. If I understand your question correctly, you're asking how I was trying to navigate back to where I'd originally clicked the cross-reference? I use the "Back" Quick Access Toolbar button, shown here. (Please let me know if I've misunderstood your question though.)

hbear655 hi, did you ever solve 'your quick access 'back' function opening a new copy of the document in RO mode?

Same started happening to me. New laptop and MSO install. Same version. Very weird

shhb65 - I don't have a solution, but it resolved itself at some point.

I suspect it was an issue with how my company stores files... We have a network drive that's Read/Write and another where it's only Read. The Back button was opening a second Word document from the Read drive, instead of navigating in the Read/Write version I was working in. I don't think I changed anything to make it work.

Sorry to not have an answer; I know that's a frustrating problem to have. Good luck!

hbear655 thank you. I'll look into that possibility with my work tech team. They are making many changes so could be a shared folder issue. Prehaps take a local copy any try thar. Annoying as it was a useful tool when editing docs with many hyper links with the file.
