Automatically apply styles and formatting to old MS Word documents based on newer template document

I have quite a number of old MS Word documents that were created with no thought to styling or formatting. Now we need to update these files. I have new versions of some of these documents with updated styling and formatting that I want to use as a template or guide.

Is there some automated tool that will scan the newer 'template' documents, then apply the same styles and formnatting to the older documents?

While depending upon the document in question, it may be possible to use Find and Replace or a macro to apply particular styles to some of the text, there is no automatic way of applying styles to the text.
