Apply default Word template to downloads

Hello, I made a default Word template with a background that I'd like to apply to downloads but it didn't apply automatically, and when I tried applying it manually using file > options > add ins > templates it only changed the font and didn't add the background. Is there any way to avoid having to do this manually? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The only way to do that would be to copy and paste everything except for the final paragraph mark in the downloaded document and paste it into a new document created from the template.

It might be simpler to use a macro to apply the required background to the downloaded document.
