Event details

Explore storage features in Windows Server 2025. We'll showcase exciting new capabilities in the ReFS file system, software-defined storage with Storage Spaces, innovation in Storage-spaces Direct (S2D), and new enhancements for Storage Area Networks (SANs) such as NVMe over Fabrics (NVMeoF). We will also show some of the incredible storage performance enhancements that make upgrading to Windows Server 2025 a must. Come for an overview of everything new, then dive into demos and a look "under the hood" of storage in Windows Server.

Yes, support for Hyper-V CSVs is being planned for the NVMe/TCP initiator. We will share more details on supported functionality as they're available. I'd like to learn more about your specific use case, I'll reach out to you directly. Thanks!

as I understood Dan, this is planned with the NVME over Fabric https://youtu.be/e8E-_lk_y84?t=366
this is only necessary for (shared) SAN, Storage Spaces (local storage) / Storage Spaces Direct (local shared storage HCI) support NVMe already with extreme performance, even improving with Windows Server 2025 new NVMe drivers and further optimizations as displayed the linked snipped.

Within the session, it mentions NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe-oF), which I believe typically refers to RDMA (TCP/ROCE vs UDP/iWARP). However, NVMe over TCP is relatively new, and I've heard that some other platforms also support it. It would be great if you could elaborate on this.

Welcome! New storage features in Windows Server 2025 is starting now. If you have any questions or feedback for our product teams, please post them here in the Comments.

  • 1. When customers already using Dedup in Windows Server 2016 through 2022, can they simply adopt the new Windows Server 2025 / Azure Stack HCI Dedup features, optionally including compression, or will they have to disable the current dedup and enable the new one using the new PS commandlets or Windows Admin Center?

    2. Will Server Manager > Storage also be updated to reflect the new Dedup, or will Server Manager eventually using the previous / different dedup?

Hi Karl, ReFS Deduplication & Compression is not related to the existing Windows Server deduplication. Therefore, users will have to disable any existing deduplication on the volume and enable the ReFS based solution using PS or WAC. We will look into adding the new ReFS deduplication into Server Manager in a future release.

Thank you Tina! So recap, as of now Server Manager will use the previous Dedup.
Using the latest Dedup requires the new PowerShell commandlets or Windows Admin Center and the minimum requirement on the OS (Windows Server 2025 and Azure Stack HCI OS (vNext)

With the new Windows 2025, are there any changes to REFS with CSV redirection mode, either in SD2 or direct SAN connectivity?

Hi Cem, there were no changes in WS 2025. CSVFS still uses File System Redirected Mode when volume is formatted with REFS.
