Issues/Loss with/of Administrative Control.

Copper Contributor

Evening Ladies and Gentlemen,

I cannot get past the windows “User Account Control” prompt that pops up before accessing certain core features. I keep getting this message mentioned below:

User Account Control
This app has been blocked for your
protection.
An administrator has blocked you from
running this app. For more information,
contact the administrator.
mmc.exe
Publisher: Unknown
File origin: Hard drive on this computer
Program location: C:\WINDOWS\system32\mmc.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\devmgmt.msc

and a bonus headache for you guys to rectify because i can't. I cannot seem to get past the loading screen of Fortnite. Each and every time I boot it up, it gives me this as follows:

FortniteClient-Win64-shipping.exe – Application error
Application failed to start correctly
(0xc0000142). Click OK to close the application.

Thank you tonnes for the help in advance!

Hi @AWTCP,

Based on your description, you are facing two separate issues:

  1. Windows User Account Control (UAC) Issue: You are unable to run certain core features, such as mmc.exe and devmgmt.msc, without receiving a UAC prompt.
  2. Fortnite Application Error (0xc0000142): You are unable to launch Fortnite, receiving an error message that the application failed to start correctly.

The solutions you can try:

UAC Issue:

  • Run as Administrator: Right-click on the program or shortcut you are trying to open and select "Run as administrator". This will bypass the UAC prompt.
  • Check UAC Settings: Open the Control Panel and navigate to "User Accounts" > "Change User Account Control settings". Make sure the UAC slider is set to a level that suits your needs. You can lower it to get fewer prompts, but be cautious about security implications.
  • Check Group Policy: Press Win + R to open the Run dialog, then type "gpedit.msc" and press Enter. Navigate to "User Configuration" > "Administrative Templates" > "System" > "Run only specified Windows applications". Make sure mmc.exe and the program you are trying to run are not listed here. If they are, remove them.
  • Check for Malware: Sometimes, malware can trigger UAC prompts. Run a full system scan with your antivirus software to ensure your system is clean.

Fortnite Application Error:

  • Update Graphics Drivers: Ensure your graphics drivers are up to date. Visit the website of your GPU manufacturer (e.g., NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel) to download the latest drivers.
  • Verify Fortnite Files: Open the Epic Games Launcher and click on the Library tab. Click the gear icon next to Fortnite and select "Verify".
  • Reinstall Fortnite: If verifying files doesn't solve the issue, consider uninstalling and then reinstalling Fortnite.
  • Check for Windows Updates: Make sure your Windows OS is up to date with the latest updates. Sometimes, Windows updates can resolve compatibility issues.
  • Run as Administrator: Right-click on the Epic Games Launcher and FortniteClient-Win64-shipping.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  • Compatibility Mode: Right-click on FortniteClient-Win64-shipping.exe, go to "Properties", and under the "Compatibility" tab, try running the application in compatibility mode for an earlier version of Windows.

Additional Solution:

  • Try restarting your computer after making any changes.
  • Disable any antivirus or firewall software that you are using temporarily.
  • Try running Fortnite in a clean boot environment. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
    2. Type "msconfig" and press Enter.
    3. Click on the "Services" tab.
    4. Check the box next to "Hide all Microsoft services".
    5. Click on "Disable all".
    6. Click on the "Startup" tab.
    7. Click on "Open Task Manager".
    8. Disable all of the startup items in Task Manager.
    9. Click on "OK" to close Task Manager.
    10. Click on "OK" to close the System Configuration window.
    11. Restart your computer.

good morning leon,

i have gone through each and every single solution you've put forward for me to try, but to no avail.

first off, for the UAC issues:

i tried running as administrator, did not work.

when i checked group policy, i can't even navigate past “gpedit.msc” i get this message:

Windows cannot find 'gpedit.msc'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.

i scanned my system thoroughly for malware, none to be found.

then, second of all, for the fortnite application error:

i always keep my graphic drivers to date, so no.

i have verified the files a gazillion times.

i haven't yet tried reinstalling fortnite yet because my internet is not the fastest, i am hoping to do this as a last ditch effort.

i am always up-to-date with windows.

run as administrator has been done tonnes of times too, no fix.

compatibility mode does not do anything either.

included in the message that pops up upon failure, something to do with:

SysWOW64 & System32 with files ending in .dll

and to finish with the additional solutions:

tried and failed.

best regards,

alexander

Hi @AWTCP,

thanks for your Update.

I'm sorry to hear that you're still having issues. Here are a few additional things you can try:

  • Repair your Windows installation. This can fix a variety of problems, including corrupted system files. To do this, open a command prompt as administrator and run the following command:

sfc /scannow

If this finds any corrupted files, it will try to repair them automatically.

  • Boot into Safe Mode. This will start Windows with a minimal set of drivers and services. If you're able to run Fortnite in Safe Mode, then you know that there's a conflict with one of your startup programs or services. To boot into Safe Mode, press Win + R to open the Run dialog, type "msconfig", and press Enter. Click on the "Boot" tab and select "Safe Boot". Click on "OK" and then restart your computer.

  • Run a system restore. This will revert your system to a previous state where Fortnite was working. To do this, type "system restore" in the Windows search bar and select "Create a restore point". Click on "System Restore" and then follow the instructions on the screen.

If you've tried all of the above and you're still unable to run Fortnite, then you may need to reinstall Windows.

Here are some additional things to note:

  • The fact that you're getting a UAC prompt for mmc.exe and devmgmt.msc is concerning. These are both core Windows components, so they shouldn't be blocked by UAC. This could be a sign of a malware infection.
  • The Fortnite application error (0xc0000142) is a generic error that can be caused by a variety of things, including corrupted system files, missing DLL files, and outdated drivers.
