Windows 11: Windows Leave a Trail or Appear Choppy When Dragged

When dragging a window on the desktop or in File Explorer, a noticeable trail or tearing effect appears along the window’s edges, and the display is choppy. The problem persists even after a restart and is particularly noticeable on high-refresh-rate monitors.

  • Hi Yates, window trails and choppy dragging usually point to display driver, refresh rate, or Desktop Window Manager trouble. I would clean-install the graphics driver, confirm the monitor refresh rate is correct, and temporarily turn off transparency and animation effects. If it started right after an update, rolling back the display driver is also worth a try.
