Windows 11 apparently uses rpc for cifs mount

Copper Contributor

Hi everybody. I recently upgraded my corporate Windows 10 to WIndows 11 (version 21H2 build SO 22000.675) having applied KB5013943.

Apart from some disturbing behaviours my biggest concern is that apparently CIFS doesn't work any more.

When I try a "net view" or a "net use" targeting a CIFS/SMB server what goes on the wire is a connection to port 111/TCP of the server.

If this is accepted (and some servers e.g. domain controllers don't) it is followed by what Wireshark names

"Portmap GETPORT Call MOUNT(100005) Version:3 TCP"

shortly after the port for accessing remote NFS service are returned and so on.

So the fact is "net" commands are executed as NFS commands.

I imagine I did something "wrong" during the upgrade to Windows 11, e.g. I chose an option which disabled CIFS/SMB and enabled NFS.

Could you please help me ?

Thanks

best regards

Riccardo
