Best way to bulk convert JPG to WebP on Windows 11 for a website?
The design images are in JPG format, which is not recommended for using in websites. I need to convert them to WebP for my website. I tried to do this with the Photos app but there is no export option for that.
Doing them one by one with some online JPG to WebP converter is not happening lol. Is there a solid free tool or a quick command-line method I can use to batch convert .jpg to .webp on Windows 11? Bonus points if it lets me control the quality/compression level so I'm not tanking image quality too much.

webp-converter-cli, which is a free and open-source option, as a best JPG to WebP converter for your needs. This tool is a Python-based command-line utility designed for converting images to WebP format. Its core features include:
- Format Support: It supports converting JPG, PNG, and MPO images to WebP.
- Quality Control: You can adjust the output quality for lossy compression on a scale of 1-100 (the default is 80).
- Batch Processing: It can handle multiple files at once, processing entire directories or files that match specific glob patterns (like *.jpg).
- Error Handling: Includes options like --continue-on-error to ensure the process doesn't stop if a single file conversion fails.
If these features align with your needs, webp-converter-cli is a strong candidate to be the best JPG to WebP converter for you, given its flexibility and price (free). It does require some comfort with the command line, as there is no graphical interface.
While functional, there are a few important points to consider about this tool:
- Status: The version described on the official PyPI page is 1.0.0, and the GitHub repository appears to be a "just for fun" project from 2016. It hasn't been updated recently, which could mean it's missing support for newer features or might not be perfectly compatible with the latest operating systems.
- Dependencies: It requires Python and pip to be installed on your system.

i2w is a Rust-based command-line tool that uses FF mpeg as its backend . While it's a simple tool at its core, it has several features that make it powerful for batch processing:
- Batch and Folder Conversion: You can convert JPG to WebP for a single file or an entire folder of images in one go .
- Recursive Processing: It can scan and convert images in subfolders, which is great for organizing a large library .
- Concurrent Processing: i2w can use multiple threads to convert JPG to WebP files simultaneously, speeding up the process significantly .
- Quality Control: You can set the output quality on a scale of 0-100, with the default being 100 .
How to Use i2w (Key Steps)
To use i2w to convert JPG to WebP, you need to install a few prerequisites first:
1. Install Rust: This is required to install the tool using cargo.
2. Install FF mpeg: i2w relies on FF mpeg to perform the actual conversion, so it must be installed and accessible in your system's PATH .
3. Install i2w: Once the prerequisites are met, you can install it with the command:
bash
cargo install i2w
Basic Usage Examples:
Convert a single file to WebP:
bash
i2w image.jpg
Convert a file and specify a name for the new WebP:
bash
i2w image.png -o output.webp
Convert a file and set the quality (e.g., 85%):
bash
i2w -q 85 image.png
Convert all images in a folder:
bash
i2w /path/to/images
Convert a folder and its subfolders:
bash
i2w -r /path/to/images
i2w depends on FF mpeg, and you will need to have Rust's build tools installed to compile it from source . This makes it more complex to set up than some other tools, but it also gives you a highly efficient tool with features like multi-threading for fast batch conversions.

Using Pillow as a best JPG to WebP converter is an excellent choice. Here’s why it’s a top contender for a best JPG to WebP converter, and how to use it effectively.
The core of the conversion is just a few lines of code. Here is a practical example:
python
from PIL import Image
# Open your JPG image
image = Image.open('my-image.jpg')
# Convert to RGB mode to ensure compatibility
image = image.convert('RGB')
# Save as WebP with quality control
# 'quality' parameter is key: 0 (worst, smallest) to 100 (best, largest)
image.save('my-image.webp', 'webp', quality=80, method=6)
Why Pillow is a Powerful Choice
- Free and Offline: It's completely free to use, and all processing happens on your own machine with no external API calls or network requirements.
- Scriptable and Automatable: It’s perfect for creating your own repeatable, automated conversion pipelines, which is a key feature of a best JPG to WebP converter.
- Full Control: While simple to use, it gives you detailed control over the most important aspect of conversion: the balance between image quality and file size.
