Why won't System Restore let me turn on protection for my C: drive?
Why does System Restore keep telling me it can't enable protection on my C: drive, and why does it sometimes show the option greyed out entirely? I've already checked that the Volume Shadow Copy and Task Scheduler services are running, tried enabling it through the GUI and through PowerShell, and even looked at the Group Policy settings, but nothing lets me turn it on.
Could this be caused by a corrupted system file, a disk space issue that's blocking shadow copies, or something that got changed by a recent update? And is there a way to get protection working again without reinstalling Windows?

You have verified Volume Shadow Copy and Task Scheduler are running, but System Protection for C: remains disabled or unavailable. Capture the specific failure instead of broad policy changes. Open Create a restore point, select C:, choose Configure, and note the exact message or whether controls are greyed out. Confirm that C: is a local NTFS volume and has free space because System Protection needs room for restore points. Then check Event Viewer when the enable attempt fails, and save any VSS or System Restore event IDs. Run Windows Update, restart, and retry once before changing services again. If the UI still cannot enable protection, use those event IDs and the Windows version when requesting support. A damaged component, storage problem, or managed policy is possible, but the symptom alone does not identify which one. Reinstalling Windows should be the last resort.
