What happens during a Blue Screen of Death?

When a Blue Screen of Death appears, Windows abruptly halts all operations because it has encountered a critical error that prevents the system from running safely. The operating system then displays a stop code on the screen, collects a small amount of diagnostic data, and automatically restarts the computer to try and recover from the failure.
