unannounced windows update

is there a reason why Windows cannot warn me about an update and prompt me to save any unsaved data?  this would save a lot of future headaches and frustrations.  plus it would be kind and polite.  i know that in these discussion boards the Microsoft community wants us to be courteous.  but that respect goes both ways.  Microsoft has to treat others how they want to be treated.
