The "Self-Referential" Error Messages on Windows 10

My Windows 10 computer has started throwing completely nonsensical error messages that seem to contradict themselves, such as telling me an operation failed while also saying it completed successfully, or warning me about a problem while the error details field remains completely blank, leaving me without any real clue as to what actually went wrong. I've already run the system file checker and checked for Windows updates, but these bizarre self-referential errors keep appearing randomly across different applications, so I'm hoping someone can help me understand whether this points to deeper system corruption, a failing hard drive, or maybe even a subtle malware infection that's interfering with Windows' ability to report errors correctly.

  • Hey, that kind of contradictory error usually points to Windows/component corruption, a bad app layer, or storage trouble. I’d start with DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, then run sfc /scannow afterward.

Next, check Event Viewer and Reliability Monitor around the exact time the errors appear. Those two usually give a better clue than the pop-up itself. I’d also check disk health and make sure you have a good backup, because strange blank or inconsistent errors can show up when Windows is having trouble reading files cleanly.
