Still on Windows 10 (with a Windows 7 skin) – am I good to keep using it?

So I'm still running Windows 10, but I've got it customized to look and feel like Windows 7—start menu, theme, the whole deal. It's comfortable, it works, and I honestly just prefer the older UI.

But with Windows 10 support ending next year, I'm starting to wonder—am I setting myself up for problems down the road? Security, compatibility, that kind of thing.

I know I could switch to 11, but I'm not really excited about it. Just trying to figure out if I'm being reckless or if it's still fine to ride this out for a while longer.

Anyone else in the same boat?

This only applies if you don't sign up for Microsoft's Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. Here's the key: Microsoft has extended the ESU program for home users all the way to October 12, 2027—a full extra year beyond the original plan.

  • The Windows 7-style appearance does not change the operating system’s support status. Windows 10 version 22H2 support already ended on October 14, 2025, so a PC without Extended Security Updates no longer receives normal security or quality updates. Run winver to confirm the actual edition and version, then check Windows Update history to verify whether the device is enrolled in ESU. ESU is a temporary bridge that supplies critical and important security updates; it does not restore feature updates or full technical support. The safest plan is to back up your files, run PC Health Check, and move to Windows 11 if the hardware qualifies, or replace the device if it does not. Before an in-place upgrade, remove any shell patcher that replaces Windows components, because those modifications can interfere with setup or servicing. You can recreate a familiar layout afterward using options that do not replace protected system files.
