Question about Windows 10 Snipping Tool Download and Shorctcut
A weird issue. Windows 10 Snipping Tool seems to be missing from my Windows 10 PC, and I'd like to know the correct way to download or restore it.
I'd also like to set up a quick way to launch it, like a desktop shortcut or keyboard shortcut to open Windows 10 snipping tool, so I don't have to search for it every time.
P.S. Any good alternative to Windows 10 snipping tool as many people don't recommend it!

Always use the official Microsoft Store or a trusted Microsoft source when getting the Windows 10 Snipping Tool.

The screenshot feature in Windows 10 helps users quickly capture and save parts of their screen. This guide covers common questions about accessing the tool, using shortcuts, and solving basic issues.
FAQ
1. Do I need to download it?
No. It is already installed on Windows 10. You can find it by searching "Windows 10 Snipping Tool" in the Start menu. If it is missing, it can be reinstalled through the optional features section in Settings.2. What is the default windows snipping tool shortcut?
The most common default is Windows Key + Shift + S, which opens the capture overlay. You can also press Windows Key + PrtScn if you have enabled that option in Settings. Many users change the shortcut to something simpler for faster access.3. Can I create a custom windows snipping tool shortcut?
Yes. Right-click the app in the Start menu, open file location, right-click the shortcut, select Properties, and enter your preferred key combination in the Shortcut key field. This lets you assign a single key or combo that suits your workflow.4. What is the difference between the Snipping Tool and the newer capture overlay?
The classic Windows 10 Snipping Tool offers a simple window with delay and mode options. The newer overlay, triggered by the default shortcut, is faster for quick captures and annotations. Both are included in Windows 10.5. Why is my shortcut not working?
Another app may have claimed the same key combination. Check background programs, or try reassigning the shortcut to a different combination. Also confirm the tool is not blocked by a system policy or third-party launcher. - GordonyIron Contributor
If the built-in Snipping Tool is unavailable, you can still capture specific areas of the screen without relying on the default Windows utility. WinShotX provides region and full-screen capture, customizable hotkeys, and basic editing tools, giving windows snipping tool download another practical meaning beyond restoring the built-in app.
windows snipping tool download
- Open the program and go to its settings to configure the keyboard shortcut you want to use for capturing the screen.
- Press the assigned shortcut and select the area you want to capture. Use the full-screen option when you need to capture the entire display.
- After the screenshot is taken, copy it to the clipboard, save it as a file, or open it in the editor to add annotations.
Once the hotkey is configured, the program can remain in the system tray, allowing you to start a new capture directly from the keyboard.
Pros:
- Customizable keyboard shortcuts
- Region and full-screen capture
- Built-in editing and annotation tools
Cons:
- Requires a separate installation
- Must remain running for global hotkeys
- Editing tools focus mainly on screenshot annotations

A missing screenshot utility can be confusing when you only need a quick way to capture part of the screen without searching through Windows every time. Snapboard can handle the same basic screenshot task as the Windows 10 Snipping Tool, while also providing configurable keyboard shortcuts for faster access.
Using Snapboard instead of the Windows 10 Snipping Tool
Step 1: Download the latest Windows installer from the official Snapboard GitHub Releases page, install it, and launch the application.
Step 2: Leave Snapboard running in the system tray so its screenshot shortcuts remain available while you use other applications.
Step 3: Press PrtScn to start a region capture, then drag over the part of the screen you want to capture.
Step 4: Use the available annotation tools if you need to add text, arrows, shapes, or blur before finishing the screenshot.
Step 5: Press Enter or Ctrl + C to copy the capture to the clipboard, or press Ctrl + S to save it as an image file.
Step 6: Open Settings → Hotkeys if you want to change the default capture shortcut to another key combination that is easier to remember.
The default screenshot shortcut may conflict with another Windows application that already uses PrtScn. Snapboard reports shortcut conflicts, so changing the hotkey in its settings is usually enough to avoid that issue.

If you mainly need to take quick screenshots and don’t want an overly complex interface, this open-source tool offers a clean and intuitive user experience. It can also serve as an alternative to the Windows Snipping Tool shortcut when you want more control over your screenshots.
How to Use the Windows Snipping Tool Shortcut
- Open Spectacle → Select the screenshot area → Take a screenshot → Perform basic editing → Save the image.
It focuses on core screenshot functionality rather than offering a host of advanced tools. If you’re used to the Windows Snipping Tool’s keyboard shortcuts, the basic screenshot workflow should feel familiar to you.
Notes
- Supports Windows and Linux systems.
- Licensed under the GPL-2.0; includes screenshot and basic editing tools.
- Offers fewer features than more feature-rich screenshot tools.

If the built-in Windows 10 Snipping Tool stops working, crashes, or goes missing, reinstalling it through PowerShell by resetting or re-registering the Microsoft.ScreenSketch package is one of the most effective fixes.
How to Fix the Windows 10 Screenshot Tool
1. Open PowerShell as an administrator, or search for PowerShell and select Run as administrator.
2. Run the following command to reinstall the screenshot tool package:
Get-AppxPackage *Microsoft.ScreenSketch* | Reset-AppxPackage
- ScreenSketch is the internal name for the modern screenshot tool.
3. If the above method does not work, use the following command to re-register the program:
Get-AppxPackage -allusers *Microsoft.ScreenSketch* | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
4. Wait for the command to finish executing; this will take a few seconds.
5. Restart your computer to ensure the changes take effect.
6. Launch the Screenshot Tool from the Start menu to verify that it is working properly.
Reinstalling via PowerShell is a reliable way to fix a corrupted Windows 10 Screenshot Tool without having to reinstall Windows or download third-party alternatives; if it still doesn't work afterward, check for Windows updates or run
sfc /scannow
to repair system files.
P.S.
- If the Reset-AppxPackage command fails, try running the re-register command.
- Before attempting to reinstall, make sure your Windows system is updated to the latest version.
- As a last resort, manually download the screenshot tool from the Microsoft Store.

Manual Association is a reliable, completely free method for creating a windows snipping tool shortcut on Windows 10, especially when the Microsoft Store is broken or the app is missing. It bypasses the Store entirely by pointing directly to the system executable.
Step 1: Locate the Executable
The legacy Snipping Tool on Windows 10 lives at C:\Windows\System32\SnippingTool.exe . If the file is missing, you can try running sfc /scannow or DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth in Command Prompt to restore system files .Step 2: Create the Shortcut with a Hotkey
- Right-click on your Desktop, go to New > Shortcut.
- In the location field, paste: C:\Windows\System32\SnippingTool.exe .
- Name the shortcut "Snipping Tool" and click Finish.
- Right-click the new shortcut, select Properties, and click the Shortcut tab.
- Click inside the Shortcut key box and press your desired combination (e.g., Ctrl + Alt + S).
- Click Apply and OK.
This method bypasses the Store entirely and binds a global hotkey directly to the system executable.
Why This Fits Your Request
- Completely Free: Uses only built-in Windows components.
- No Third-Party Tools: Bypasses the Microsoft Store entirely.
- Challenging: Requires manual path entry and shortcut configuration.
- Reliable: Works even when the Store or Snip & Sketch fails.
The key limitation is that this binds to the legacy SnippingTool.exe, which may be phased out on newer builds. But for a pure, script-friendly windows snipping tool shortcut, this manual approach is the most direct solution available.
