How can I convert swf files to mp4 now on Windows?
Found a collection of old SWF files that contain animated Flash videos. Since Flash Player is no longer supported, opening and using these files on a modern Windows PC has become difficult.
Looking for a reliable SWF to MP4 software while keeping the animation, audio, and original quality as much as possible. Some of these files may also be interactive Flash content, so not sure whether normal video converters will work.
What tools are people using nowadays to convert animated SWF files to MP4 on Windows? Something reasonably beginner-friendly would be preferred.

The command line tool ffconvert

Flash2Video This tool is a command-line application, meaning you would run it from a terminal or script, which aligns with your request for a challenging method.
- Core Functionality: It can convert SWF to MP4, as well as to other formats like AVI, WMV, FLV, and GIF.
- Advanced Features: The tool supports Flash ActionScript (AS1, AS2, AS3) and can handle complex SWF files with audio and interactivity.
- Integration Ready: It is designed to be called from various server scripts like PHP or Python, making it suitable for automated conversion workflows.
While I don't have the exact syntax for the command-line arguments from the search results, the general process for similar tools involves:
1. Locating the Executable: The program is named Flash2Video.exe or similar.
2. Running the Command: You would call the executable from your command prompt or script, providing the input SWF file and desired output parameters (like file path and format) to convert SWF to MP4.
3. Adjusting Settings: A CSDN blog post describing a related software (ThunderSoft Flash to MP4 Converter) notes that for some SWF files, you may need to adjust the Frame Rate to avoid black screens in the output video. A higher frame count in the SWF may require a proportionally higher frame rate setting.

Using JPEXS Free Flash Decompiler (FFDec) combined with a custom script is a powerful method to convert SWF to MP4, but it is not a straightforward one-step conversion if as a SWF to MP4 software . FFDec is primarily a tool for extracting and analyzing resources from SWF files, not a video converter.
To achieve a true MP4 output, you would need to create a two-step workflow using a script to automate the process.
1. Export Video and Audio Separately: Use FFDec's command-line interface to export the video stream and the audio from the SWF file. The FrameExporter can handle animation frames, while the Sound Exporter handles audio extraction.
2. Combine and Convert with Another Tool: You would then need to use a second tool, like FF mpeg, in your script to combine the exported video and audio streams into a single MP4 file.
A script for this process might look something like this:
bash
# Step 1: Export video frames as FLV
java -jar ffdec.jar -export frame -format flv your_file. swf ./output/
# Step 2: Export audio as MP3
java -jar ffdec.jar -export sound -format mp3 your_file. swf ./output/
# Step 3: Combine and convert to MP4 using FF mpeg
ffm peg -i ./output/frame_0.flv -i ./output/sound_0.mp3 -c:v copy -c:a aac output_video. mp4
While you can create a script that uses JPEXS and FF mpeg to achieve the conversion, you would be using JP EXS to extract data and another tool to build the final MP4. This method is a "challenging and complex free method" that avoids dedicated SWF to MP4 software, but it comes with significant technical hurdles.

Swivel is an open-source tool specifically designed to convert SWF to MP4 on Windows. It's a great choice because it can export high-definition video without dropping frames or losing audio sync, which is exactly what you're looking for.
How to Use Swivel to Convert SWF to MP4
- Get the Tool: You can download Swivel.
- Add Your File: Open Swivel, click "ADD" next to "Input SWFs", and select your SWF file.
- Choose Your Mode: For simple files that play automatically, select "Frame Range". For complex files with preloaders, select "Manually Start and Stop Recording".
- Set Video Options (Optional): Go to the "VIDEO" tab to adjust resolution, bitrate, and codec. The default is a 1080p H.264 MP4, which works well for most situations.
- Start Conversion: Click the "CONVERT" button, then click "RECORD". If you're in manual mode, click "Play" in the preview window. When your movie finishes, click "STOP" and wait for the conversion to complete.
However, there are a few important things to keep in mind:
- Compatibility: While it works for many files, there have been reports of the software failing to open or convert specific SWF files. It's best to test it with your specific file to see if it's compatible.
- Manual Mode for Complex Files: If your SWF file has menus or interactive elements that don't play automatically, you can use the "Manual" recording mode. This allows you to click the play button yourself and then stop the recording when your content is finished.
Swivel is a powerful and free solution to convert SWF to MP4 on your Windows PC, especially if you need high-quality results and are willing to accept potentially long processing times.

You can use FF mpeg because it is an open-source command-line tool capable of convert swf to mp4 with excellent video quality. It is well-suited for processing animated SWF files, such as cartoons, banners, and slideshows. The software preserves the smoothness of animations and the fidelity of audio while giving users full control over the output parameters.
How to Convert SWF to MP4
Step 1: Install the software on your system.
Step 2: Open a command prompt in the folder containing the SWF file.
Step 3: Run the following command:
ff mpeg -i input.swf -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.mp4
- -c:v libx264 = H.264 video codec for high-quality video
- -c:a aac -b:a 192k = AAC audio at a bitrate of 192 kbps, ensuring good audio quality
Step 4: Wait for the conversion to complete.
- The MP4 file is now ready.
- For Stuttering Animations
Step 5: If the animation plays too fast or stutters, add the frame rate parameter:
ff mpeg -i input.swf -c:v libx264 -r 30 -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.mp4
- -r 30 forces the frame rate to 30 frames per second for smoother playback
The software has no limitations. Thanks to its speed and image quality, it has become a reliable solution for conversion, especially for older Flash content that modern browsers no longer support.

When standard converters fail to work properly, screen recording is the last resort for convert swf to mp4, especially for interactive content such as games, menus, and clickable animations. Since SWF files are designed for interactivity rather than linear video playback, screen recording while you actively interact with the file is often the only way to preserve the full user experience.
Procedure:
Download Ruffle → Open the SWF file in the player → Use OBS Studio to record your screen while interacting with the SWF file → Save the recording in MP4 format.
Key Points:
- Suitable for interactive content; provides a reliable method for convert swf to mp4 when automation tools cannot handle SWF files.
- Manual interaction is required during recording, and the final video quality depends entirely on screen resolution and recording settings.
This method is essential for preserving Flash games and interactive animations whose content might be lost during format conversion.

Old Flash content can be difficult to use today because modern browsers no longer support the original Flash plugin. If you need to preserve an old animation or interactive project as a regular video, converting it can be a practical solution. This is why some users look for a SWF to MP4 Converter download.
Ruffle is an open-source Flash Player emulator that allows older SWF content to run on modern systems without the original Flash plugin. It is mainly designed for playing and preserving legacy Flash content rather than directly exporting SWF files as MP4.
If you need a SWF to MP4 Converter download, you can use Ruffle to verify that the SWF file still works and then record the playback with a screen-recording tool. This approach is useful for preserving older Flash animations when direct conversion is not available.
