How can a laptop trackpad behave differently between the login screen and the desktop?
My laptop trackpad works perfectly fine once I am logged in and on the desktop, but it behaves very differently on the login screen, where scrolling and gestures often do not respond the same way. I want to understand why the trackpad has different behavior between the login screen and the desktop, and whether this is caused by driver loading or system settings.

This can be normal, especially if pointer movement and clicking work at the sign-in screen but advanced gestures do not.
Windows supports basic touchpad input before you sign in. After sign-in, your user-specific settings and any manufacturer gesture software can take effect. The sign-in screen also has fewer actions for gestures to perform: switching apps or virtual desktops has no equivalent there, and scrolling only works over an area that supports it.
You can distinguish a limitation from a fault with two checks:
- At the sign-in screen, test moving the pointer and physically clicking. If both work and only multi-finger gestures differ, that usually does not indicate a broken driver. There is no general setting that makes every desktop gesture work before sign-in.
- If basic movement or clicking is also unreliable, install the touchpad driver recommended for your exact laptop model from its manufacturer, along with any required chipset or Serial IO drivers listed for that model. Restart and test before signing in.
It is not necessarily that the entire driver loads only after login. Often, the difference is the available interface, user settings or additional gesture software. Since your desktop behavior is normal, avoid uninstalling a working driver just to restore a gesture the sign-in screen may not support.
