Disk usage in Windows 10 often spikes to 100%, causing the system to lag
When I open Task Manager, disk usage often shows 100%, even though I’m not actually reading or writing a large number of files. This causes the system to become unusually sluggish, which is most noticeable within the first few minutes after startup. Disabling Windows Search and SuperFetch helps somewhat, but it doesn’t completely resolve the issue.

Hello,
Suggest you to run System File Checker scan to fix possible corruption of system files:
- Search for 'command prompt' using Windows Search.
- From results, right click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Type sfc /scannow command and press Enter key.
- Let the command complete and then reboot the machine.
Also, perform clean boot to identify, if any third-party service or program is behind this issue:

Additionally, if you're on HDD, I suggest to switch to SSD.
Let us know if this helps!

Sometimes, it's not a software issue at all. A failing or faulty hard drive can cause exactly this problem—spiking to 100% usage with almost zero read/write activity, slowing your entire system to a crawl . One user had the same issue with a Kingston SSD, tried everything, and the only fix was replacing the drive .
