Re: Remove "Start backup" from File Explorer
That does make me feel a smidge better, thanks. Still very much hate that button though. Incredible that they're mucking around with core functionality like an address bar for OneDrive ads. I'm really beginning to dislike MS. Feels like every other month I need to fight another customer-hostile move (news widgets that can't be disabled / web searches in start etc).6.7KViews0likes1CommentRe: Remove "Start backup" from File Explorer
It's infuriating. I can no longer drag a folder path from the address bar to create a shortcut. Plus now I wonder if I could accidentally mess up folder locations by hitting that dumb button. And finally it just adds visual clutter with something that has zero use for me. Bad move by MS.6.7KViews1like3CommentsRe: Introducing Buy now, pay later in Microsoft Edge
PSA: Firefox is available in the Windows app store, and the transition is remarkably smooth. Bookmarks and passwords can be imported seamlessly, and tbh everything works as it should, but without any preinstalled coupon extensions or related bloat. There's still a few privacy settings to tweak upon install, but they're easily found, and more reasonable than what Edge is doing. I moved from Chrome to Edge Chromium pretty much when it became available, but recently it's been so in-your-face about unnecessary additions that I finally made the switch. Too bad, I liked it for the most part.4.5KViews3likes1CommentRe: Why are custom search engines not synchronized?
Hey Alexandra, thanks for the response. I think this kind of thing the team should discuss. It's a setting that's available in Edge, so if the goal is to synchronize all settings, this should simply be included. The cynic in me thinks that such a handy advanced feature is not used enough (and not advertised enough tbh), so MS will simply let it languish and not work on improving it. I hope I'm wrong though!2.4KViews0likes2CommentsWhy are custom search engines not synchronized?
edge://settings/searchEngines in Edge are super handy, but on every new machine I need to manually set them up again. Can these please be added to the list of things that are synched through our MS accounts? I don't understand why this isn't near the top of the to do list, if it's even on it at all. For me it's only 10 that I regularly use, but it's still a pain. Next machine: my new Surface Laptop Studio. Everything I need is synchronized, except search engines.2.5KViews2likes9CommentsLack of focus on (communicating) privacy approach is a mistake
I just got updated to 93, and there's the usual splash screen with info on updates. "See ratings!" "Apply all your coupons!" "Save money!". All of this sounds exactly like the privacy invading nonsense that is affecting just about all free software these days. I think it's a huge mistake to not accompany all this with a disclaimer stating why this DOES respect your privacy. I came to Edge from Chrome because of privacy concerns, but by now Edge is beginning to feel like the worse of the two, with built-in "coupon stuff". We had a discussion before that Edge does take some care to keep this info private, but without communicating this to the user, Edge looks as bad as or even worse than other options out there. Please reconsider this approach! As in, maybe put 'privacy communication approach' on a team meeting agenda in the coming weeks?481Views0likes0CommentsRe: Can I remove Modern Comments and revert back?
Praise be! Not sure if it broke anything else, but I've deleted these keys (after exporting them to a folder I can easily find if needed) and disabled office updates, and my trusty old non-infuriating comments are back! Thank you!!!98KViews0likes0CommentsRe: New Edge Canary Mobile version - Available Now - Updated Chromium version
HotCakeX They should call the Canary version "Rough Edge" 😄 I do really miss the ad blocker from the previous version, hope that makes it in soon. Main reason for me: animated ads are pretty unpleasant to look at on an e-ink device!6.4KViews3likes2CommentsRe: New Edge Canary Mobile version - Available Now - Updated Chromium version
HotCakeX Nice! But why does the New tab have a chromium icon as the favicon? Ew! 🙂 Some good news: this build fixes the problem with single taps on e-ink devices. At least single tap to close tabs works perfectly now on my Boox Note Air. Awesome.6.4KViews2likes4CommentsRe: Edge performance on e-ink devices - a few show-stopping bugs
Now that I've earned my two-year anniversary badge, I'm hoping as a reward I'll get an answer by MS here. Is there an Edge coder out there with access to an e-ink device? Have these bugs been logged somewhere, or do e-ink tablets not exist as far as MS is concerned?1.3KViews1like0CommentsRe: Start Microsoft Edge quickly with startup boost
It's great to be able to clear selective cookies. You can whitelist login cookies from sites that you trust, and then with one click clear all other cookies. And while at it you can clear the browser cache, but that you can already do inside Edge. I don't use any of the other features, but the selective cookie clearing is useful.6.9KViews0likes0CommentsRe: Start Microsoft Edge quickly with startup boost
Translating that from Polish I get "Good morning, I haven't had CCleaner for many years because Windows 10 has excellent disk cleanup tools! Edge is so carefully prepared to enter the settings that it cleans cookies and cached files - according to user settings! It requires manual settings - but it works reliably and doesn't affect the functionality of the new Edge! In my opinion, Windows 10 does not require any additional utilities! Edge's extensive settings allow many individual settings - giving maximum user satisfaction and it really works very well! I recommend New Edge. Thank you very much " To which I say: yes, you can clear history and cookies in Edge, but it purges ALL cookies at once, meaning the next time you visit e.g. a forum, you'll have to log in again. CCleaner allows you to whitelist cookies for your favorite sites, while purging all others. IMO this is a great feature that I'd love to see implemented in Edge. Until then, I'll keep using CCleaner, but ATM that requires that I disable Startup Boost, close Edge, run CCleaner, start Edge, and re-enable Startup Boost. Not the end of the world, but it would be nice if this wasn't necessary.79KViews1like2CommentsRe: Start Microsoft Edge quickly with startup boost
Good feature, but it introduces a problem: an app like CCleaner which can be used to clear select cookies now always complains that Edge is still running, and then fails to close Edge. It took me a while to realize that this is caused by Startup Boost. Is this issue something that CCleaner can fix on their own, or is this something that will require changes by both the Edge team and CCleaner?79KViews0likes8CommentsEdge performance on e-ink devices - a few show-stopping bugs
I've started using Edge Android on a Boox device, an e-ink Android tablet for note taking and annotation, but running full Android 10. Edge works pretty well on the device (touch scrolling, pinch-zooming work great) but there are a few bad bugs. It would be great if the Edge Android developers could fix the most glaring bugs. Main issue, it seems like the touch interface doesn't properly handle single taps in some scenarios, so there may be a single simple fix that resolves all bugs below, e.g. some timing problem due to slow e-ink redraw of animations after touch. Bug 1: when the web page prompts for access to GPS location or notifications, that prompt cannot be dismissed by touch or pen. Long presses or tapping do nothing on that dialog. Bug 2: it's not possible to switch tabs with a single tap on the tab. Long press on a tab does switch to it. Bug 3: it's not possible to close tabs with short or long press on the 'close' icon (doesn't work with stylus either). At best, a tap on the 'x' causes the x to blink twice, but the tab remains open. CTRL-W on a bluetooth keyboard does work. Long-pressing on the 'close' icon does offer 'close all tabs', so at least that's something! 🙂 Aside from these bugs, Edge is my favorite browser on the Boox. Unlike the built-in Neobrowser Chrome variant and Chrome, Edge actually offers some ad blocking. Much appreciated, since animated ads don't look great on e-ink. Looking forward to some fixes!1.5KViews1like2CommentsRe: Built-in shopping extension sends bad message
markshelton After your post and after reading the Privacy disclaimer (looked good, but I'd still like to see a statement along the lines of "MS will not resell your data, and will only share aggregate data with vendors" or so) I actually did give it a whirl when buying a https://www.guitarcenter.com/Martin/Special-X-Series-Style-000-Cutaway-Sized-Acoustic-Electric-Guitar.gc. Edge told me that there was a coupon, but applying it Guitar Center told me that it was expired. Due to the roundabout way that I did this (checked for a coupon using Edge in an incognito window after remembering and enabling the functionality, applied the coupon to the original cart) Edge probably didn't notice the coupon fail, so I didn't get to see how that part of the UX works (if any).3.5KViews1like5CommentsRe: Built-in shopping extension sends bad message
markshelton Thanks for the response, much appreciated. Perhaps a balance can be struck where in the welcome message there is a simple link that states "Read how we protect your privacy". That same dialog should have a 'turn on' option for the new feature, showing the user that the feature was not turned on by default. Even if people don't click through the link, these two minor changes would immediately show that MS cares about privacy, which I think is important for Edge's reputation.3.6KViews0likes8CommentsRe: Built-in shopping extension sends bad message
markshelton I'm sure the Shopping functionality is a nice feature for many, but the way it was introduced and (iirc) enabled during an update may rub some people the wrong way. If Edge is to be a privacy conscious counterpoint to Chrome, any new feature should be introduced with an accompanying message that states how the user's privacy is being respected. IMO it is not enough to say "Here's a cool new feature, and if you care about your privacy, here's a link". Better would be "Here's a cool new feature, and unlike some competitors, we are putting privacy first, and this is how. .... For more information see the detailed privacy policy". Until recently I was feeling pretty good about Edge, but the Shopping feature definitely looks like a turn for the worse. Please reconsider the privacy messaging in Edge, thanks!3.6KViews1like10CommentsRe: Built-in shopping extension sends bad message
HotCakeX Thanks for the link. I still feel very strongly that this should be off by default, and any message of its availability should be accompanied by super clear info about how this can be done without affecting your privacy. Stuff like this being turned on during an update makes me stop recommending Edge and leave people on Chrome. I hope MS will reconsider their approach.3.6KViews0likes0Comments
