Retiring my own Entra tenant: how can I preserve my existing Tech Community profile?
I have an existing Microsoft Tech Community profile with years of posts, replies, subscriptions, reputation and private messages.
The profile is currently accessed using a work/school Microsoft account belonging to a Microsoft Entra tenant that I own and plan to retire (not migrate: retire).
When I try to sign in with a personal Microsoft account, Tech Community presents a first-time consent screen, which makes me concerned that it would create a new profile rather than attach to the existing one.
Unlike Microsoft Learn, I have not found any option to link accounts, merge identities, or change the sign-in identity for an existing Tech Community profile.
Questions:
- Is there any supported way to preserve access to an existing Tech Community profile after the work/school account used to sign in is no longer available?
Is there any supported way to transfer, migrate, associate, merge, relink, or otherwise preserve an existing Tech Community profile and its data?
What happens to an existing Tech Community profile if the Microsoft Entra tenant that owns the work/school account is retired?
If preserving the existing login identity is not possible, is there a supported way to preserve and transfer all existing profile data (posts, replies, subscriptions, private messages, badges, reputation, groups, follows, etc.) to a new account?
I would appreciate guidance from Microsoft staff or anyone who has successfully gone through this process.
Thanks!

Before retiring your Entra tenant, contact the Microsoft Tech Community team to ask whether your existing profile can be linked to a personal Microsoft account. Keep your current tenant active until you confirm how to preserve your posts, badges, reputation, and profile history.

If you’re retiring your Microsoft Entra tenant and want to preserve your existing Microsoft Tech Community profile, the key is to confirm how your community profile is linked to your sign-in account before deleting the tenant.
You should not assume that deleting the tenant will automatically transfer your profile or preserve access to it.
Recommended steps
Contact Microsoft Tech Community support before retiring the tenant. Email email address removed for privacy reasons and explain that you want to retain your existing profile and contributions.
Ask whether your existing sign-in can be retained or changed. Microsoft Tech Community guidance indicates that switching from a work or school account to a personal Microsoft account is not supported for an existing profile.
If necessary, create a new profile using the personal Microsoft account you intend to keep, then ask the team whether your contributor level or community roles can be transferred.
Understand the limitations. Based on published Tech Community staff responses, contributor levels and certain roles may be transferable, but existing posts, replies, and message history cannot be transferred to the new profile.
Microsoft Community Hub
Retire the Entra tenant only after confirming your options. Deleting a tenant removes its organizational resources and can prevent you from signing in with the associated work or school account.

Bottom line: Do not assume your existing profile can be migrated intact. Contact the Tech Community team before deleting the tenant, and request written confirmation of what can be preserved. The published guidance does not establish a supported way to transfer all profile data from a work or school identity to a personal Microsoft account.

Hi, I could not find an official Microsoft guide for this. I am sharing what I know from my experience. A Microsoft employee may correct me if I am wrong.

Keep the tenant active until you’ve spoken to the Tech Community team. A personal Microsoft account is a different identity, even if it uses the same email address, so don’t assume it will open your existing profile.
There isn’t a self-service account-linking option I can point you to. Contact Tech Community support or a community manager while you can still sign in, provide your profile URL, and ask whether they can change the login associated with that profile while keeping its history and private messages.
The consent screen alone doesn’t tell you whether a new profile will be created. If support can relink the account, test the personal-account login before deleting the tenant. In the meantime, save anything important—especially private messages. I wouldn’t assume a full profile export can later be imported into a new account.

Microsoft retired free E3 Developer license which I have been using for much more than a decade; I am using the trials to buy time for migration but would avoid having to pay for a license to wait for MS to answer.
I know perfectly that email addresses do not identify an (Entra ID) account, only the ID is the unique identifier.
What questions me, as a European Citizen, is that GDPR grants a right to rectify personal data (art. 16) so it would be perfectly legitimate, and MS by law abide to that, to ask to have the email address here in my community profile updated. How would MS act in that case, especially if the new email address isn't linked to any MS account?
You are correct assuming profile can't be exported (or imported) : we are technically locked in exclusively because of a MS choice: there is no technical reason to require that as proven by hundreds of thousands of online communities that can work with a simple email or mobile phone number.

Keeping your profile: I don’t know if you can change the sign-in account for an existing Tech Community profile. It seems to be linked to the account you used when you first signed in.
The team may be able to transfer your contributor level to a new profile, but your old posts and message history cannot be transferred.

Before closing your old tenant, I suggest contacting the Tech Community team to ask what will happen to your profile and data.
I hope this helps!
