Unable to sync library or open in Explorer View because there are too many files

I have a user who wants to be able to drag folders around, but when I tried to show her how to open the libary in Explorer View, she got an error that the library was too large (I believe there were around 13,000 documents in the library, and counting!). We got the same error when trying to sync the library. Is there a setting that can be changed to allow her to open the library in Explorer View? If not, I'm recommending splitting the documents up into separate libraries.

If you really have 13000+ files in that root folder ... you will encounter other issues in SPO.  One is that the search will not find items because the index does not handle that number-of-items well.  Microsoft's recommendation is 5000 files/folders per root folder.  My practical experience is 8k is about the cut off.

I just looked, it's actually over 17,000! Trust me, someone else set this up :smileyhappy:

You could ask your admin if they have daily time window set up for when large queries are allowed, but I believe this is only an option if you have the on-premises version of SharePoint. You can read more about this in https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Manage-large-lists-and-libraries-in-SharePoint-2013-and-SharePoint-2016-b8588dae-9387-48c2-9248-c24122f07c59and then choosing "Using the daily time window" under the heading Ways to manage lists and libraries with many items.

This is SharePoint online, not on-prem

  • Unfortunately, there is not such a setting...you could also wait until next generation sync client is ready for SPO Sites (Expected at the end of the year)
