Deploying Custom Solutions in SP 2016 to Subscription Edition

hello,

as content database migration from SP 2016 to SSE is supported, i would like to understand if all the custom solutions [wsp's] in existing environment can be as is deployed to SSE environment or do they needs to be upgrade etc.

For e.g when migrating from SP 2010 to SP 2013 we had to re-build the solution and also update the.net framework, so do we need to do anything like this while moving from SP 2016 to SSE??

Hi @Ketan Gandhi, it's difficult to answer that question without knowing the specific details of your solutions. But in general, solutions that are compatible with SharePoint Server 2016 should be compatible SharePoint Server Subscription Edition as well.  However, keep in mind that SharePoint Server Subscription Edition introduces modern UI and new site templates like the Modern Team Site and Communication Site.  So solutions that depend on classic UI may not be compatible with modern UI.  (Note that the modern UI in SharePoint gives you the option to switch to the classic UI to access any functionality or capabilities that aren't available in the modern UI.)

FWIW, SharePoint 2010 was based on .NET Framework 3.5 while SharePoint 2013 was based on .NET Framework 4.5, so that's a significant reason why .NET-based solutions may need to be recompiled.  Future versions of SharePoint Server have continued to use .NET Framework 4.x, with SharePoint Server Subscription Edition using .NET Framework 4.8.

Will this wsp  packages be supported in Sharepoint server subscription throughout or at somepoint, we have shift to spfx framework or online

Hi @atty231, Microsoft has no plans to stop supporting full trust solutions (WSP packages) in SharePoint Server Subscription Edition.  However, we encourage customers to explore converting full trust solutions into SharePoint Framework (SPFx)-based customizations, which are compatible with both SharePoint Server Subscription Edition and SharePoint Online.  This way they'll be easier to migrate to SharePoint Online if/when you're ready to make the move to the cloud.
